PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, New Jersey — The Marietta College men's rowing team closed out the fall racing season at the 46th annual Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta Sunday (Nov. 10) afternoon.
Held on the 2,000-meter Cooper River Course, the annual event is named in honor of Braxton, who was a member of Marietta's 1973 lightweight 8+ crew that went undefeated and captured Dad Vail gold.
"It was a good regatta today and a nice way to end the fall season," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "Colgate had our number today. But we raced very well and everyone got a whiff of what we may be able to do this spring if we're diligent in winter training."
The fours were first on the water. The three-boat freshman race saw Colgate (7:11.07) beat Marietta (7:34.70) to the line by 20-plus seconds. Stony Brook (8:43.58) finished a distant third over a minute behind the Pioneers.
The varsity 4+ race had two flights and both were won by Colgate with Marietta finishing second. In the first flight, Colgate (6:49.18) edged the Pioneer B crew (6:55.75) by six seconds. Marietta's A shell (7:10.39) was third, followed by Binghamton (7:16.37) and Stony Brook A (7:41.78).
Colgate B (6:48.63) won the second flight with open water on Marietta C (7:14.15). Loyola (7:38.61) and Stony Brook B (8:20.39) rounded out the second flight.
Six seconds is all that separated Colgate and Marietta in the varsity 8+ race. Colgate (6:07.02) was first across the line, followed by Marietta (6:13.01), Loyola (6:37.13) and Binghamton (7:45.84).
In the closest race of the day, Marietta finally turned the tables on Colgate in the junior varsity 8+ race. The Pioneer A crew (6:23.35) beat Colgate (6:25.56) to the line by three seconds. Marietta's B shell (6:38.45) was third.
