PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — The Marietta College men's rowing team had a solid showing at the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday (Oct. 26). The Pioneers entered seven crews in four races and came away with one win and three other top-10 finishes.

"Pretty good day all in all. The highlight of the day was our victory in the freshman four event," Marietta head coach Greg Myhr said. "Our top eight raced in the championship eight event, which is a tough race, and they raced hard and did really well."

The Pioneer win came in the college freshman/novice 4+ race where Marietta posted the best time out of the 16 crews entered. The Navy Blue and White crossed the line in 15:01.517, 22 seconds ahead of the second-place shell from Lafayette (15:23.448). Loyola, US Military Academy and Manhattan rounded out the top five.

Marietta entered three shells in the championship 4+ race finishing fifth, ninth and 14th out of 40 total crews. Among the college entrants, the Pioneers were third, sixth and tenth out of 33 boats.

The Potomac Boat Club crew won the race with a time of 13:10.862, while St. Joseph's was the top collegiate shell placing third overall with a time of 13:22.198). Marietta was fifth overall finishing 40 seconds (13:50.778) behind the winning crew. The Pioneers' other two boats crossed the line in 14:07.071 (9th overall) and 14:25.227 (14th overall).

After the morning fours, the eights took center stage in the afternoon. In the club championship 8+ division Marietta's 2V crew placed 12th overall, while the 3V boat finished 23rd out of the 36 total entrants. Among the college shells, the Pioneers were tenth and 17th out of 28 crews.

Once again, the Potomac Boat Club took home the overall victory posting a time of 12:26.553. Drexel, the top collegiate shell, was close behind finishing second with a time of 12:35.237. Marietta's 2V crew posted a time of 13:09.848 to place 12th, while the 3V was 23rd with a time of 13:36.416).

The final boat on the water for Marietta was the varsity 8+ crew in the championship 8+ race. The Vesper Boat Club took the gold medal with a time of 11:54.506 with Pennsylvania less than three second behind (11:56.796) in second place. The Pioneers crossed in 12:49.200, good for 12th overall and eighth among college crews.

Marietta is right back on the water Sunday (Oct. 27) at the Princeton Chase.
