Men's Rowing claims three silver and one bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. — It was a busy day for the Marietta College men's rowing team as the Pioneers had eight boats on the water at the Head of the Occoquan Saturday (Nov. 3) afternoon. Seven of the eight recorded Top-10 finishes, while three earned silver medals and one bronze.

"It was a solid day of racing with some positive results from all of our boats," Marietta head coach Philip Schmehl said. "We are temporarily satisfied as there is still more speed to gain."

In the varsity 8+ race, Marietta finished third behind a pair of boats from Georgetown. The Georgetown "A" shell posted a time of 14:38.74 with the "B" boat crossing in 14:52.87. Marietta's "A" shell took third with a time of 15:00.07, while the "B" boat placed ninth with a time of 15:44.82).

Georgetown and the Pioneers battle each other in the JV 8+, the varsity 4+ and the JV 4+ races. In the JV 8+ race, Georgetown took the gold with a time of 15:20.81 with Marietta winning silver (15:48.73).

Georgetown also claimed the varsity 4+ gold with a time of 16:19.00. Marietta placed second with a time of 16:40.41. Marietta's "B" crew (17:28.44) finished ninth, while the "C" crew (18:12.35) was 15th.

In the JV4+ division, Georgetown took the top two spots with the Pioneers placing fifth. The Hoyas' top crew posted a time of 17:09.52, their "B" shell crossed in 17:25.61, while Marietta recorded a time of 19:10.04.

Marietta's final entrant was in the freshman/novice 4+ race where La Salle won the gold medal with a time of 17:42.76. The Pioneers took the silver medal with a time of 19:00.18.

The Pioneers sat the following lineups:
Varsity 8+ A: coxswain Chrissy Billingsley (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Chris Metz (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) in the stroke seat, Morgan Pirie (The Woodlands, Texas), Michael Shrader (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence), Evan Odom (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista), Brooks Spires (Sebastian, Fla./Sebastian River), Ethan Schafhausen (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central), Angelo Leitner-Wise (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) and Dylan Dalpedri (Spring, Texas) in the bow.

Varsity 8+ B: coxswain Manning Shaw (Charleston, S.C./School of the Arts), John Montano (Spring, Texas) at stroke, Joseph Madrid (Mineral Wells, W.Va.), Patrick Watson (Sarasota, Fla.), Scott Cressman (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge), William Rafferty (Moorestown, N.J./), John Saunders (Buffalo, N.Y./), George Riffle (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and Samuel Rojas (Bronx, N.Y./) in the bow.

JV 8+: coxswain Georgia Majka (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City), stroke Mitchell Nelsen (Placerville, Calif.), Edmund Lynch (Marietta, Ga.), Cameron Short (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), Drayton Piper (Roswell, Ga.), Brett McGettigan (Absecon, N.J.), Tyler Heldt (Tampa, Fla.), Eli Egyed (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Benjamin Heckathorn (Westerville, Ohio) in the bow.

Novice 4+: coxswain David Sher (Merion Station, Pa.), Albert Gorman (Wallingford, Pa.) at stroke, Gregorio Puntarelli (Houston, Texas), Jonathan McWhite (Harvard, Mass.) and Andrew Novak (Sewickley, Pa.) in the bow.

Varsity 4+ A: coxswain Billingsley, Metz at stroke, Odom, Leitner-Wise and Schafhausen in the bow.

Varsity 4+ B: coxswain Majka, Cressman at stroke, Spires, Madrid and Watson in the bow.

Varsity 4+ C: coxswain Sher, Short at stroke, Rojas, McGettigan and Piper in the bow.

JV 4+: coxswain Egyed, Josh Loudon (Streetsboro, Ohio/) at stroke, Patrick Malone (Mount Laurel, N.J.), Richey Puntarelli (Marietta, Ohio/) and Novak in the bow.

The Pioneers will close out the fall racing season at the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta on Sunday, November 11th.
