Women's Soccer tames the Terriers

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team got goals from a pair of freshmen strikers to defeat Hiram College 2-1 Thursday (Sept. 8) afternoon in the Pioneers' home opener. Marietta improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Terriers slip to1-1-1 overall.

"Obviously we are excited about winning the home opener," Marietta head coach Tracy Blasius said. "We played well as a team. Our freshmen are starting to score and continue to become more productive."

Kayla Tomlin (Sardinia, Ohio/Eastern) got the Pioneers on the board in the 29th minute with her second goal of the season. Rookie midfielder France Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples) threaded a long pass through the heart of Hiram's defense to Tomlin.

Tomlin ran onto the ball and created a one-on one with HC keeper Alina Mille. Tomlin beat Mille with a shot into the lower left corner of the net for the game-winner.

Hiram subbed Ally Green for Mille in goal at halftime and Marietta wasted little time putting pressure on the new keeper. Just over five minutes into the second half the Terriers were whistled for a foul 25 yards from their own goal.

Pioneer senior Cassie Wint (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) took the direct kick and riffle a shot that Green stopped, but was unable to control. McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) was there to put the follow up shot in the back of the net for a 2-0 MC lead. The goal was Dorr's second of the season.

The Terriers cut the lead in half three minutes later. Abbey Rowe took a pass from Emily Syrjala at the top of the 18-yard box and beat Marietta keeper Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) for her first goal of the season.

Marietta went back on the attack and controlled possession for most the remaining time. The Pioneers outshot Hiram 21-7 for the match.

Tenney went the distance in goal for MC recording one save. Mille had two saves in the first half for Hiram and Green made eight saves in the second half.

Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Sept. 10) when the Pioneers host Westminster College at 5 p.m. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu.
