MARIETTA, Ohio — Westminster College defeated Marietta College by the score of 3-0 Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon in women's soccer. The loss drops Marietta to 2-2 on the season, while the Titans improve to 1-2-1 overall.
After battling to a scoreless tie in the first half, Westminster found the back of the net three times in the second half. Keely Birsic took a pass from Carli Sebest at the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot past MC keeper
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) in the 72nd minute for the first goal of the match.
Emily Irvine then scored two goals in less than two minutes for a 3-0 Titan lead. Irvine notched an unassisted goal at the 79:50 mark and then scored with an assist from Birsic at 81:03.
Tenney had seven saves in goal for the Pioneers. Laura Page started in goal for Westminster and made three saves in 84-plus minutes of action. Ashley Smialek finished the game and did not have to make any saves.
Westminster outshot the Pioneers 14-7 for the match. The Titans also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
