Women's Soccer buries the Bearcats

MARIETTA, Ohio — One goal was enough as the Marietta College women's soccer team defeated visiting Saint Vincent College 1-0 Tuesday (Sept. 13) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 1-2-1 overall.

Freshman Kayla Tomlin (Sardinia, Ohio/Eastern) tallied the lone goal of the match in the 29th minute. Fellow rookie France Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples) sent a long through ball to Tomlin who found herself open on the right side of the 6-yard box.

Tomlin fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net for the game winner. It was her third goal of the season.

The Pioneer defense took care of the rest as Marietta limited to Saint Vincent to five shots in the match, and only two on goal. The Bearcats best scoring opportunity came in the final minute of the match.

Following a yellow card issued to Marietta, Calsey Holshue took the direct kick from 25-yards away from goal. Her shot was knocked down by Pioneer keeper Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange), but not controlled.

A scramble ensued in front of the Marietta goal and the Pioneer defense was able to clear the ball before Saint Vincent could score the equalizer.

Tenney recorded two saves as she posted her second clean sheet of the season. Senior Cassie Wint (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) and freshmen Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne), Meredith Snow (Millersburg, Ohio/West Holmes) and Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) dominated the back line and prevented Saint Vincent from mounting much of an attack all afternoon.

Melissa McCarthy played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bearcats recording four saves.

Marietta outshot the Bearcats 16-5, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Saint Vincent took six corners in the match to five for the Pioneers.

Marietta travels to Geneva College on Friday (Sept. 16) for a 4 p.m. match. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu. You can also follow the Pioneers on Facebook at facebook.com/MariettaCollege and @MariettaPioneer on Twitter and Instagram.
