BETHANY, W.Va. — Three different freshmen scored goals as Marietta College defeated Bethany College 3-0 Monday (Sept. 5) afternoon in women's soccer action. The Pioneers move to 1-1 on the season, while Bethany falls to 0-2 overall.
"I'm really proud of our effort today," Marietta head coach
Tracy Blasius said. "Our defense is starting to come together and Bex (Tenney) has been a rock in the net."
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers posting MC's first clean sheet in 29 matches. Tenney made four saves in the shutout.
Senior
Cassie Wint (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) anchored Marietta's defense, which limited the Bison to eight shots. The remainder of the back line included freshmen
Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central),
Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne),
Brittany Palm (Prosperity, Pa./McGuffey) and
Meredith Snow (Millersburg, Ohio/West Holmes).
While the defense was pitching a shutout, a trio of freshmen forwards each notched their first career goals in the Navy Blue and White.
Raeli Barnes (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) took a pass from
Layne Archer (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) inside the six-yard box and put the ball in the back of the net at the 34:04 mark for the game winner.
The Pioneers added two more goals in the second half.
McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) launched a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that cleared the Bethany keeper making it 2-0 in the 57th minute.
Kayla Tomlin (Sardinia, Ohio/Eastern), with an assist from
Sophia Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples), slipped one past the keepr in the 68th minute for the final goal of the match.
"It was nice to see some freshmen get their first collegiate goals," Blasius said. "Hopefully the first of many!"
