Women's Soccer edges Earlham 2-0

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College scored two second half goals to defeat Earlham College by the score of 2-0 Wednesday (Sept. 21) afternoon in women's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 5-3 overall and Earlham slips to 0-6 on the season.

"Our defense remains solid and the offense is working hard to create more chances for us," Marietta head coach Tracy Blasius said. "We settled down in the second half and executed well. We are still looking to finish more of our chances but we took a step forward today."

After a tough first half that saw both defenses limit the opposition's attack to few scoring opportunities, the Pioneers struck quickly in the second half.

Less than two minutes into the period, senior Cassie Wint (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) took possession of the ball beyond midfield and sent a long pass into the 18-yard box to McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley). Dorr controlled the pass and fired off a shot that beat the Earlham keeper for the first goal of the match. Dorr currently leads Marietta with four goals on the season.

Marietta doubled its lead four minutes later on a corner kick. Freshman Sophia Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples) dropped the corner kick in front of the goal. The ball took an awkward bounce and rolled into the net for a 2-0 Pioneer lead and Moise's first career goal.

The Pioneers stayed on the attack outshooting Earlham 12-0 in the second half. Earlham keeper Sara Stissi made six saves in the half and finished the match with eight.

Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) posted the clean sheet in goal for Marietta. Tenney made a pair of saves in her third shutout of the season. Patrolling the back line for Marietta was Wint, Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne), Brittany Palm (Prosperity, Pa./McGuffey) and Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central).

For the match, Marietta took 20 shots while limiting Earlham to three. The Pioneers also held a commanding 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
