Box Score 2 BETHANY, W.Va. – Marietta College split a softball doubleheader at Bethany College Tuesday (April 22) afternoon. The Pioneers took game one, 4-0, and the Bison won the nitecap by the score of 5-4. Marietta moves to 21-13 on the season, while Bethany is now 14-20 overall.
Four unearned runs in the top of the second inning proved costly for Bethany in the first game. Following a defensive miscue by the Bison, Marietta received a two-run single from
Brianna Finck (New Lexington/Crooksville) and RBi-singles from
Brittany Curry (Newark/Licking Valley) and
Cierra Bloom (Dennison/Claymont).
Those four runs were all of the support that junior
Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) would need. O'Hair (11-6) tossed the complete-game shutout scattering three base hits. She walked one and struck out three.
Junior Kelsey Bish (7-9) took the loss after working 7.0 innings and allowing four unearned runs in five hits. She walked three and struck out four.
Bethany jumped on Pioneer starter
Trinity Schlabach (Wooster/Waynedale) in game two scoring three runs in the second and adding two more in the third. The Pioneers finally got on the board with a four-spot in the fifth.
Marietta loaded the bases with no outs to start the inning. Finck plated the first run with an unassisted ground out to the first baseman. A wild pitch scored the Pioneers' second run.
Following a walk to
Kelsey Kallenborn (Marshallville/Smithville) that gave MC runners on the corners with one out, Schlabach smacked a double to right center to make it 5-3. Marietta's next batter,
Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley), laced a single up the middle scoring Kallenborn with the fourth run of the inning.
Bethany starting pitcher Kiersten Conwell worked out of trouble and got the win. Conwell (7-8) threw 5.0 innings and gave up four runs on five hits. She walked five and struck out four. Kadie Kelly earned her first save retiring all six batters she faced in the final 2.0 innings.
Schlabach (8-7) was tagged with the loss. She pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. O'Hair tossed 3.2 innings of shutout relief without allowing a hit.
