Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Marietta College softball team split a pair of games to open the season Sunday (March 9) afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers defeated Roger Williams 3-2 and fell to Cortland State by the score of 4-1.
Against Roger Williams, the Pioneers scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings while junior pitcher
Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) was holding the Hawks' offense in check.
Marietta got on the board first when
Trinity Schlabach (Wooster/Waynedale) led off the second with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kaitlin Kinchock.
Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) followed with an RBI single scoring Schlabach.
In the third, a lead off walk to
Michelle Kelley (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) would prove costly to the Hawks. Kelley stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt by
Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake). Kelsey kallenborn delivered a sac fly to plate Kelly.
It was a similar scenario in the fifth as
Brittany Curry (Newark/Licking Valley) led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Mayo then singled to drive in Curry giving Marietta a 3-0 lead.
O'Hair (1-0) allowed just one hit through the first four innings. Roger Williams finally got to O'Hair in the fifth. The Hawks scored two runs on three hits to get within a run. But O'Hair retired Roger Williams in order in the sixth and seventh to secure the win.
The Pioneers jumped on top against Cortland State with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Kelley walked to start the inning and then was sacrificed to second by Mayo. Kallenborn knocked Kelley in with a single.
The game quickly turned into a pitcher's duel as Schlabach and Cortland's Sarah Salamone put zeros on the board until the Red Dragons tied the game with an unearned run in the sixth.
Cortland added three more unearned runs in the seventh inning to escape with the victory.
