Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Washington and Jefferson College scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning to defeat No. 11-ranked Marietta College by the score of 12-10 Thursday (March 27) evening at Don Schaly Stadium. The loss drops Marietta to 11-5 on the season, while the Presidents evened their record at 7-7.
Typical of a non-conference game played late in the week, both teams used a lot of young pitchers in the game and the offenses took advantage of the situation. The two teams accounted for 22 runs and 30 base hits.
W&J's Derek McIlvaine and D.J. Michalski both went 4-for-6 in the game. McIlvaine had a pair of doubles and four runs scored, while Michalski drove in six runs in the game.
Pioneer shortstop
Senior Kyle McLain retired the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the tenth for his fifth save of the season. Freshman Tim Mulvey (1-1), brother of former Pioneer Mike Mulvey (Glenshaw, Pa./North Catholic), got the win working 1.0 inning of shutout relief.
Marietta freshman Ray Sowinski (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) (0-1) took the loss. Sowinski threw 1.0 inning and gave up two runs on three hits with a walk.
Junior shortstop Ryan Hanahan (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three runs scored. Center fielder Dylan Gracia (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) had a pair of doubles and three RBI, while designated hitter Chris Winpigler (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) went 2-for-5.
