Softball sweeps home and OAC opener from Wilmington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College swept Wilmington College Saturday (March 22) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference softball action. The Pioneers downed the Quakers 10-2 in five innings and 6-3 to improve to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

Wilmington (7-10 overall, 0-2 OAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the first innings. The Pioneers got on the board with three runs in the third and then exploded for seven in the bottom of the fifth inning for the mercy rule victory.

Catcher Rachel Montgomery (Massillon/Perry) delivered a two-run single in the third inning to give Marietta a 3-1 lead. The Quakers added a run in their half of the fifth before the Pioneers put the game away in the bottom half of the inning.

Marietta sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth. Trinity Schlabach (Wooster/Waynedale) and Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) led off with singles and came around to score on a defensive miscue. Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) smacked a two-run double in the rally, while Michelle Kelley (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) drove in a run on a ground ball in the infield. The Pioneers plated the final run on a passed ball.

Junior Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) (4-2) went the distance in the circle for Marietta. She scattered six hits to go along with four walks and two strikeouts.

Second baseman Brittany Curry (Newark/Licking Valley) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Montgomery and Kerwood each drove in two runs.

Danielle Monnier (4-5) started in the circle for Wilmington and took the loss. She worked 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

Wilmington jumped on top in the second game as well scoring two runs in the first inning. Marietta evened the score with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Tarski led off with a single up the middle and came around to score on a wild pitch. Later in the inning Kelsey Kallenborn (Marshallville/Smithville) scored on a sac fly from Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake).

Schlabach (3-3) settled down after the first inning and blanked the Quakers until the seventh. Schlabach worked 7.0 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Schlabach doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Marietta loaded the bases and Brianna Finck (New Lexington/Crooksville) walked to score Schlabach. Mayo followed with a two-run single and Kerwood drove in the fourth run of the inning with a sac fly.

Kerrie Trautman (3-5) started and took the oss for the Quakers. Trautman threw 5.0 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. She walked three and struck out two.

Curry again led the Marietta offense going 2-for-3. Mayo drove in three runs and Tarski and Kallenborn each scored twice.
