Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Wilmington College overcame a 10 point deficit in the final 37 seconds of regulation and went on to defeat Marietta College 103-102 in double overtime Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon in women's basketball. The Quakers outscored Marietta 12-2 at the end of the second half to force overtime.
Marietta (8-9 overall, 2-8 OAC) committed three costly turnovers during the Quaker run and Wilmington's Hannah Haeseker drained a pair of three-pointers. Haeseker was 0-for-5 from long range prior to hitting the two in the final seconds of the second half.
Wilmington (10-7 overall, 7-3 OAC) trailed 38-32 at halftime and then watched the Pioneers shoot 60% from the floor in the second half building an 80-70 lead with 37 seconds remaining. The Quakers went into a full court press and tied the game at 82 at the end of regulation.
Both teams scored seven points in the first overtime period. Freshman
Emily Sabatino (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) sank a three-pointer with 21 seconds left in the first extra period to knot the score at 89 and force a second overtime.
Sabatino hit another trey midway through the second overtime to put the Pioneers in front 100-94 with 2:15 remaining. Wilmington's Spencer Robles answered with a deep three-pointer to start a 9-0 Quaker run. Haeseker made 1-of-2 free throws for a 103-100 lead with four seconds left on the clock. Sabatino made a layup at the buzzer for the final margin.
Junior
Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) led all scorers with a career-high 23 points. She also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Sabatino finished with 21 points, also a career-best, including five three-pointers.
Senior
Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) was 5-of-5 from the floor with four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. She is now 14 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau. Junior
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) scored 12 points before fouling out of the game with 4:46 left in regulation.
Makenzie Wippel led four Quakers in double figures with 20 points. Robles scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Haeseker added 15 points. Brittaney Jefferson chipped in with 11 points.
Wilmington outrebounded the Pioneers 42-28. Marietta committed 23 turnovers, while the Quakers turned the ball over 18 times.
For the game, Marietta shot 53.0% (35-of-66) from the floor, 54.2% (13-of-24) behind the arc and 76.0% (19-of-25) at the free throw line. Wilmington was 31-of-74 (41.9%) from the floor, 15-of-35 (42.9%) from three-point range and 26-of-34 (76.5%).
