MARIETTA, Ohio - What a baseball game!
After a rainy, wet Friday that never saw the loser's bracket games get played fans that came to Don Schaly Stadium Saturday for the loser's bracket matchup between top seeded Marietta College and second seeded John Carroll University were treated to a classic that saw the Pioneers outlast John Carroll, 11-10, in an extra inning thriller
The game went 13 innings, the teams had a combined 33 hits, a combined 11 errors and left a combined 27 runners on base but the only numbers that mattered were in the runs column where Marietta edged John Carroll by one run.
The Pioneers (29-11 overall) after giving three runs in the top of the 13th inning sparked a rally in the home half of the inning to score four runs and advance in the loser's bracket of the OAC Tournament. The Pioneers next game will be a rematch of Thursday's tournament opener with the Pioneers facing the Cardinals of Otterbein University.
Evan Brockmeier (5-4) picked up the on the mound for Marietta, despite being the third pitcher used by Coach Brain Brewer. Brockmeier pitched 7.2 innings giving up four runs, two earned on seven hits.
Kevin Rosinski (2-3) was tagged with the loss. Rosinksi pitched 0.1 innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Rosinski came on in relief of Zach Verner, the Blue Streaks closer. Verner kept the Pioneers' offense in check until the 13th inning. Verner threw 3.2 innings and was charged with the first two runs of the 13th.
Marietta posted a five-spot in the first frame. The first five Marietta College batters reached base and later scored in the opening inning.
Mitch Geers (West Chester/Lakota East) and
Bryan Gregorich (Chardon/Chardon) each picked up a pair of RBIs in the inning.
John Carroll (25-16) used the long ball to fight back. An Aaron Miller solo homerun to left field in the third inning and a Jimmy Spanga two run blast in the fifth cut the lead to two runs. Marietta answered with two in the bottom half of the fifth on a two RBI double by
Tim McCoy (Willoughby, Ohio/St. Ignatius).
John Carroll cut the lead to one in the sixth inning scoring three runs. Back-to-back doubles by Joe Veltri and Bobby Sabatino to lead off the inning scored one run. Sabatino scored on a fielder's choice by Spanga. Spanga later scored on a Miller double.
Marietta would hold on to the one-run lead until the ninth inning. Chet Lauer led off the ninth inning with a single and was plated on a sacrifice fly by Veltri to knot the game.
The game remained tied until the Blue Streaks scored three runs in the top of 13th, aided in part by Marietta defensive errors. In the home half of the inning some defensive miscues by John Carroll and some timely Marietta College hitting was just enough for the Pioneers to pull off the most unlikely of comebacks and advance in the OAC Tournament.
