Softball run-rules Denison in nightcap to earn doubleheader split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College split a non-conference doubleheader with Denison University Sunday (April 7) afternoon. The Big Red won the first game 2-1, while the Pioneers took game two by the score of 12-1.

Marietta moves to 15-9 on the season, while Denison is 12-8 overall.

Denison got solo home runs from shortstop Rachel Laughlin in the second inning and catcher Meghan Edwards in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead in game one.

Junior Rebecca Dyer (6-4) cruised through the first five innings in the circle for the Big Red. Dyer went the full 7.0 innings for the win. She gave up one run on four hits and struck out 11 Pioneer hitters.

Marietta scored a run in the sixth to cut the Big Red lead to one, 2-1. Senior second baseman Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) walked to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake). Right fielder Trayla Liles (Tollesboro, Ky./Lewis County) singled to left scoring Swejk.

Dyer retired the Pioneers in order in the seventh to seal the victory for Denison.

Pioneer catcher Ris McDaniel (Pickerington/North) went 2-for-3, while Laughlin was 2-for-3 for the Denison.

Freshman Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) (6-5) took the loss. Larrick tossed 7.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Game two was all Marietta as the Pioneers scored in each of their four at bats, including nine runs in the third inning for a 12-1 run-rule victory.

Edwards hit a solo home run in the top of the third for Denison's only run of the game.

Sophomore Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) (6-3) threw 5.0 innings for the win. O'Hair surrendered one run on three hits, while striking out four.

The Pioneers sent 15 hitters to the plate in the third inning collecting seven base hits. The big blow of the rally was a three-run home run off the bat of Liles. Mayo plated a pair of runs with a two-out double.

Designated hitter Kelsey Kallenborn (Marshallville/Smithville) finished 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI. Senior shortstop Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Mayo went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs batted in.
