Softball sweeps Ohio Northern to stay unbeaten in the OAC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Ohio Northern University, the defending OAC champions, Friday (March 29) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game 8-1 and then took the nightcap by a 4-1 margin.

With the wins, Marietta is off to a 4-0 start in the OAC for the first time since 2006. The Pioneers are 13-5 overall. Ohio Northern falls to 1-9 on the season and 0-4 in league play.

Sophomore Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) (5-2) tossed a complete game for the Pioneers to pick up the win in the first game. O'Hair scattered seven hits and allowed one run. She walked two and struck out three.

Marietta scored two in the bottom of the second to take the lead and never trailed. The Polar Bears cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third.

The Pioneers added three more in the fourth inning for a 5-1 lead. Shortstop Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) led off with a double and then scored on a double by designated hitter Ali Keller (Wheelersburg/Notre Dame). RBI singles from third baseman Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) and catcher Ris McDaniel (Pickerington/North) accounted for the other two runs.

Senior Trayla Liles (Tollesboro, Ky./Lewis County) put an exclamation point on the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) and McDaniel were issued walks setting the stage for Liles who crushed the ball over the leftfield fence for her second round tripper of the year.

Ohio Northern senior Katy Newman (0-5) took the loss. Newman pitched 4.0 innings and gave up five runs on nine hits. She walked two and struck out three. Freshman Alex Manno allowed three runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. Manno also issued four base on balls.

Liles finished the game 2-for-4 with the home run and three runs batted in. Keller was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles. Sayre and Mayo also had two hits in the game.

In game two the Pioneers got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Marietta scored four runs on five hits in the opening frame.

McDaniel ripped an RBI double into the leftfield corner to score the first run of the game. Sophomore Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) connected on a two-run double and junior Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) plated the fourth run with a single down the leftfield line.

Freshman Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) (5-3) went the distance in the circle for the Pioneers. She allowed one unearned run on just five hits, all singles. Larrick walked one and struck out seven.

Senior Abbey Bensing (1-3) was tagged with the loss. Bensing pitched 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. She walked four and had three strikeouts.

Mayo and Liles each collected two hits in the game for Marietta.
