Softball splits a doubleheader with Bethany

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Bethany College (W.Va.) Thursday (March 28) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game 10-5 and were then shutout by the Bison in the second game, 5-0.

Bethany (7-7 overall) jumped on Marietta starting pitcher sophomore Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) with two runs on four hits in the first inning. Following a line out from the leadoff hitter, the next three Bison hitters all hit safely including an RBI double from first baseman Emily Jump.

Pioneer senior catcher Ris McDaniel (Pickerington/North) cut the Bethany lead in half in the bottom of the first inning when she blasted a solo homer run to straight away center field. It was McDaniel's first round-tripper of the season.

Marietta (11-5 overall) took the lead with two runs in the fourth and then took advantage of some control problems from the Bison pitchers to score five runs in the fifth to push the lead to 8-3.

In the fifth inning, Marietta received five walks including two with the bases loaded. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) delivered a two-run single and the Pioneers scored another run on a wild pitch.

Bethany managed an unearned run in the sixth and plated one in the seventh on a solo home run from right fielder Maria Vallone.

Marietta picked up a couple of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Senior first baseman Ali Keller (Wheelersburg/Notre Dame) had an RBI single and junior center fielder Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) drove in a run with a sac fly.

O'Hair (4-2) went 5.1 innings to get the win. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. O'Hair issued two walks and had one strikeout.

Sophomore Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) earned her fourth save of the season with 1.2 innings of relief work. Kerwood gave up one run on two hits.

Kierston Conwell (2-5) took the loss for Bethany. Conwell tossed 4.1 innings and was charged with six runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

The Pioneers collected 10 hits in the game. Seniors Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge), Trayla Liles (Tollesboro, Ky./Lewis County) and Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) each had two hits in the game. Swejk, Mayo and Tarski drove in two runs apiece.

Bethany senior Emily Jump (5-2) pitched a complete-game shutout in the nite cap. Jump retired Marietta in order in five of the seven innings she worked and allowed just two singles in the game. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. Jump faced 23 Marietta batters in the game, two more than the minimum.

Vallone gave Bethany all of the offense they would need with an RBI triple in the third innings. The Bison added two runs in the fourth and one each in the fifth and seventh innings for the 5-0 win.

Freshman Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) (4-3) took the loss. Larrick pitched 3.1 innings and surrendered three runs on five hits. Larrick walked two and struck out two.

Freshman Trinity Schlabach (Wooster/Waynedale) allowed two runs on two hits in 3.2 innings of work. Schlabach walked one and had a strikeout.

Tarski and junior left fielder Michelle Kelley (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) each had a single for the Pioneers.
