Softball sweeps Greensboro to open 2013 season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Marietta College softball team opened the 20-13 season with a doubleheader sweep of Greensboro College Saturday (March 2) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game 5-4 in eight innings and then completed the sweep with an 11-9 victory in the nite cap.

The Pioneers fell behind early in the first game when Greensboro plated two quick runs in the bottom of the first. A two-run double from first baseman Reihle Kash plated the two runs.

Marietta got one back in the second inning. Senior Ris McDaniel (Pickerington/North) started the inning off with a walk and moved to second on an infield single from Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence). Trayla Liles (Tollesboro, Ky./Lewis County) followed with a single through the right side scoring McDaniel.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the fourth inning. Tarski was issued a one-out walk and moved to second on a single from Liles. After a fly out, sophomore Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) launched a home run over the leftifeld fence to tie the game, 4-4.

The score remained tied until the top of the eighth inning. Freshman Rachel Montgomery (Massillon/Perry) singled up the middle and was sacrificed to second by Kerwood. Freshman Jayla Graves (Newark/Newark Catholic) followed with another single up the middle scoring Montgomery with the go ahead run.

Greensboro threatened in the bottom of the eighth. Taylor Freeman started the inning with an infield single. She was sacrificed to second by Kash and went to third on a wild pitch.

Sarah Tompkins reached on an error giving the Pride runners at the corners with one out. Shelby Drummonds pinch ran for Tompkins and was gunned down by McDaniel trying to steal second. Greensboro's next batter grounded out to end the game.

Sophomore Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) started the game in the circle for Marietta and went 5.1 innings. She gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits. O'Hair walked one and struck out two. Kerwood (1-0) picked up the win throwing the final 2.2 innings. Kerwood allowed no runs on one hit.

Jackie Nicholson (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Nicholson pitched 4.0 innings in relief and gave up one run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Kelsey Sanfilippo started the game for the Pride. She tossed four innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits. Sanfilippo walked two and struck out eight.

Liles was 3-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in. Montgomery finished 2-for-4 with a double and Kerwood was 1-for-3 with the three-run home run.

Greensboro scored first in game two with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers plated six in the top of the third only to have the Pride answered with three more in the bottom of the third to knot the score at 6-6.

Marietta trailed 8-7 heading into the top of the seventh. The Pioneers plated four in the inning to take an 11-8 lead. Liles drove in two with a single up the middle and Kerwood knocked in another with a single through the left side.

Liles collected three hits in four at bats and drove in three runs. Senior Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) was 2-for-4, while sophomore Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) drove in a pair of runs.

Freshman Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) was Marietta's starting pitcher and she went 4.2 innings. Larrick allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits. She walked three and had four strikeouts.

Freshman Trinity Schlabach (Wooster/Waynedale) (1-0) picked up the win. She pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Kerwood  picked up the save tossing the seventh inning.

Marietta is off until nest Sunday (March 10) when the Pioneers open play in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Pioneers will play 10 games in Florida.
