Marietta is now 7-3 on the season and will wrap up play in Florida with two games on Friday. The Pioneers play the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (Conn.) at 1:00 p.m. and Lake Forest College (Ill.) at 3:00 p.m.
In the first game of the day, the Pioneers broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the top of the third inning. Senior
Ris McDaniel (Pickerington/North) had an RBI-double and
Trayla Liles (Tollesboro, Ky./Lewis County) drove in another run with a single up the middle.
Albion (0-8 overall) battled back with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to cut the Pioneers lead in half, 4-2. The Britons were aided by a Marietta error, as one of the two runs was unearned.
Freshman
Trinity Schlabach (Wooster/Waynedale) started in the circle for the Pioneers and went 3.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits. She walked two and struck out three. Classmate
Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) (2-2) picked up the win in relief. Larrick threw 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out one.
Marietta added a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth for a 10-2 lead. The big blow was a three-run double off the bat of senior shortstop
Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley).
Liles,
Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley),
Ali Keller (Wheelersburg/Notre Dame),
Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) and
Michelle Kelley (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) each had two hits in the game for Marietta.
Sophomore
Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) (2-1) went the distance in the second game to pick up her second win of the season. O'Hair took a shutout into the seventh inning before allowing two runs. For the game she scattered five hits, walked two and struck out five.
Marietta scored one run in the first, third and sixth innings. Senior
Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) led off the bottom of the first with an infield single.
Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) sacrificed Swejk to second and then McDaniel drove her in with a double.
Swejk and McDaniel teamed up again in the third inning. This time Swejk started the inning with a single to left field and then stole second. McDaniel dropped a single into right field scoring Swejk with the Pioneers' second run.
An unearned run in the sixth would prove to be the game-winner for the Pioneers. Sayre led off with a single and was stealing second when ball four was issued to
Brittany Curry (Newark/Licking Valley). Albion still played on Sayre and threw the ball away allowing her to come all the way around to score.
Kean (6-4 overall) got RBI doubles from senior Courtney Melchionna and freshman Casey Glatts to get within a run before Marietta was able to secure the win.
Sayre went 3-for-3 to lead the Pioneer offense. Mcdaniel and Swejk each collected two hits, while McDaniel drove in two runs.
