Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College softball team swept a doubleheader from Ohio Wesleyan University Monday (April 9) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game 5-4 and took game two by the score of 6-4. Marietta improves to 16-10 on the season, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 9-13 overall. [

The Battling Bishops jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and two more in the third. Second baseman Steph Cunningham drove in a pair of runs with a double in the first. Designated hitter Dani Haley made it 4-0 with a two-run blast off the scoreboard in the third.
Marietta responded with two runs in third and fourth innings. Left fielder
Michelle Kelley (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) led off the third with a single. Following a sacrifice bunt, third baseman
Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) singled up the middle. Shortstop
Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) knocked them both in with a two-run single to center.
Mayo delivered the big blow in the fourth inning with a two-run double that tied the game, 4-4. Kelley reached on an error and second baseman
Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) singled and stole second before Mayo doubled to the left-center gap.
Kelley started the sixth off with a single. Swejk walked and then a sac bunt from Mayo moved the runners into scoring position at second and third. Catcher Marissa McDaniel reached on a fielder's choice but picked up the RBI as Kelley scored on the play giving the Pioneers a 5-4 lead.
Freshman Alexis O'Hair retired the Bishops in order in the seventh to pick up the victory. O'Hair (10-4) went seven innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Dani Haley (4-7) took the loss for Ohio Wesleyan. Haley pitched six innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits. She walked three and struck out four.
Mayo, Kelley and right fielder
Kirstie Welch (Pickerington/North) each had two hits in the game for Marietta. Mayo doubled and drove in two runs, while Sayre also picked up two runs batted in.
Ohio Wesleyan drew first blood in the second game as well. The Bishops loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning. An RBI single by Haley and a sac fly from Cunningham gave Ohio Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers scored two in the second to tie the game and then took the lead with a run in the third. Marietta then scored two runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan cut the lead to one, 5-4, with a run in the sixth. But, the Pioneers go the run back in the bottom half of the inning to claim the 6-4 victory.
Freshman
Emily Estrich (Sylvania/Southview) (5-5) picked up the win for Marietta. Estrich went five innings and allowed four runs on four hits with six walks and two strikeouts. Senior
Hazel Brogdon (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak) notched the save with two innings of shutout relief. Brogdon allowed one hit with a walk and a strikeout.
Marietta collected 10 hits in the game as four Pioneers had two hits. Swejk and center fielder
Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) were both 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Sayre went 2-for-3 with an RBI and designated hitter
Chelsea Obrzut (Medina/Medina) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Marietta hosts Muskingum University on Wednesday (April 11) for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
