Pioneers and Cardinals split OAC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College softball team split its Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with the visiting Otterbein Cardinals Tuesday (April 17) afternoon at Marietta Field. Marietta took game one of the twinbill 6-0 while Otterbein came back with a 9-4 win in the nightcap. The Pioneers now sit a 18-14 overall record and a 6-8 OAC record. Otterbein now is 20-10 overall and 7-5 in the OAC. [Game One Box] [Game Two Box]

Freshman Alexis O'Hair picked up the game one victory. O'Hair (11-5) went all seven innings giving up no runs on four hits with one strikeout.

Sophomore Jessa Ott (Baltic/Garaway) drove in the game's first run with an infield single which would score junior Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) from third giving Marietta an early 1-0 lead through two innings.

Senior Hazel Brogdan used an infield putout with the bases loaded to score the second Pioneer run of the game. Marietta added three runs in the fifth to bust the game open. Sayre used a hard hit single and a Cardinal error to score junior Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) and freshman Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) putting the Pioneers ahead 4-0. Sophomore Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) then reached on a bunt single to bring home Sayre pushing the lead to 5-0 through five innings.

Mayo drove in the final Pioneer run in the sixth with a double to right scoring sophomore Michelle Kelley (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) who reached by error earlier in the inning.

Sayre led the way offensively in game one going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mayo also went 2-for-3 with one run batted in. Tarski, Ott and Brogdan each drove in a run in the game one win.

Both teams finished the first game with three errors. The Cardinals stranded four base runners while Marietta stranded six.

The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap. A Marissa McDaniel single and an Otterbein error allowed Mayo to cross and give Marietta a 1-0 lead through the first inning.

Otterbein would explode with eight runs on 11 hits in the top of the third to nab its first lead of the afternoon, 8-1. Marietta responded with three runs in the bottom half of the third. Mayo drove in McDaniel with a hard hit triple to the left field fence plating the second Marietta run. A Tarski single would then plate Sayre from third. Tarski scored off a double from Allison Keller, cutting the Cardinal lead to 8-4 through three innings.

The Cardinals plated one in the fourth pushing the lead to 9-4.

Both teams were unable to find the scoreboard through the final three innings as the Cardinals went on to win 9-4.

McDaniel went 2-for-4 in game two with a RBI and a run scored. Brogdan also went 2-for-4 in game two. Sayre and Tarski each went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday (April 21) afternoon when they travel to play John Carroll University in an OAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
