Softball loses two at Ohio Northern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ADA, Ohio – The Marietta College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday (March 31) afternoon at Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bears won the first game 6-1 and took the nitecap 11-3. Marietta falls to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the OAC, while Ohio Northern improves to 13-5, 4-0. [Game One Box] [Game Two Box]

Ohio Northern scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one and never trailed. Freshman Kelly Sheridan got the Polar Bears on the board with a solo home run to left field.

Marietta answered with a run in the top of the second. Junior shortstop Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) led off with a single and stole second. She advanced to third on a single by junior right fielder Kirstie Welch (Pickerington/North) and scored on a wild pitch.

The Polar Bears added two runs in the third and another in the fourth. Ohio Northern banged out 11 hits to just five for the Pioneers.

Freshman Alexis O'Hair (6-4) took the loss for the Pioneers. O'Hair pitched four innings and allowed six runs, all earned, on nine hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Senior Hazel Brogdon (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak) pitched the final two innings.

Junior Abbey Bensing (5-3) went the distance to get the win for Ohio Northern. She allowed one run on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Junior catcher Marissa McDaniel reached on a two-out single and, following a Polar Bear miscue, scored on a single by sophomore centerfielder Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence).

Ohio Northern scored two in the first and three more in the third to take control of the game. The Polar Bears plated five in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on a mercy rule.

Freshman Emily Estrich (Sylvania/Southview) (3-4) was the losing pitcher. Estrich threw four innings and allowed six runs, all earned, on nine hits. She walked four and struck out three. Brogdon came on in the fifth and gave up five unearned runs on three hits with a walk in 0.2 innings of work.

Junior Katy Newman (4-2) got the win. She pitched five innings and surrendered three runs, one earned, on six hits. Newman walked two and had five strikeouts.

Freshman designated hitter Chelsea Obrzut (Medina/Medina) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in. Sayre was 1-for-3 with a double.

Marietta hosts Kenyon College tomorrow (April 1) in a 1 p.m. twinbill.
