Softball splits doubleheader with Wooster

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio - Head softball coach Jeanne Arbuckle's Pioneer softball squad can't seem to break the doubleheader split streak. The Pioneers have now split doubleheaders with its last three opponents, includings Wednesday's (March 28) split with in state rival Wooster. The Pioneers run-ruled the Fighting Scots in five innings 12-4 in game one, only to fall in the nightcap 4-3. The Pioneers are 9-7 overall on the year while Wooster is now 13-5. Freshman Alexis O'Hair took the game one win going five innings allowing four runs, two earned, while scattering nine hits with two strikeouts. O'Hair is now 6-3 on the year.

After plating a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead, the Marietta bats came alive in the third. Junior Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) hit her second homerun of the season, this one a two-run shot to dead center to put Marietta ahead 3-0. A few batters later, freshman Chelsea Obrzut (Medina/Medina) hit her first career homerun to right center, also a two-run shot to put Marietta ahead 5-0 through three.

After Wooster plated three in the top of the fourth, Marietta responded with two more in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) belted a double to left field, which allowed junior Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) to advance to third from second after Swejk singled and stole second earlier in the frame. Sophomore Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) then singled down the right field line scoring both Swejk and Mayo putting the Pioneers ahead 7-3.

The Fighting Scots added a run in the fifth before another big Marietta inning would put the game away. Mayo came up to bat with the bases loaded an nobody out and recorded a single and RBI. Junior Marissa McDaniel then used a sacrifice fly to score another Marietta run. Sayre added a single to drive in another score for Marietta, which was followed by a Tarski double plating two more; thus ending the game with a 12-4 score.

Tarski went 4-for-4 in game one with four RBIs. Sayre went 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Obrzut went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Mayo went 3-for-4 with a RBI while senior Hazel Brogdan went 2-for-3 with a RBI in the game one victory.

The Pioneers wasted no time getting started in game two, scoring two runs in the first frame. Swejk scored the first for Marietta on a double steal play. Sayre continued her hot afternoon belting a RBI single to right scoring Mayo from third.

Wooster would fight back, plating two runs in the top of the second to even the score at 2-2. The scored remained tied at 2-2 until the fifth when the Fighting Scots went ahead 3-2 through five innings. Wooster added another insurance run in the seventh to lead 4-2 with one Marietta at bat to go.

The Pioneers made it interesting in the seventh and refused to go away quietly. Tarski started the rally with a one-out single down the right field line. She would advance to second on a Kirstie Welch (Pickerington/North) sacrifce bunt. Obrzut then singled putting runners on the corners with two outs and the score 4-2 in favor of Wooster. Allison Keller came through with a big pinch hit single scoring Tarksi and advancing the tying run to third.

Wooster pitcher Gina Pirolozzi was able to strike out the final Marietta hitter to give the Fighting Scots the one-run game two win.

Sayre led the way in game two going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Keller went 1-for-1 with a RBI in the nightcap.

Freshman Emily Estrich (Sylvania/Southview) took the game two loss. Estrich (3-3) went six innings allowing three runs, one earned, with two strikeouts. O'Hair came on relief in the seventh allowing one unearned run one two hits.

The Pioneers committed four errors in the nightcap leading to three of Wooster's four runs.

Marietta will return to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Saturday (March 31) afternoon at Ohio Northern. First pitch from Ada, Ohio is scheduled for 1 p.m.
