Marietta made its first appearance in the OAC tournament since 2005. The Pioneers' 10 wins were also the most for Marietta since winning 10 games during the 2004-05 season.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead on a pair of jumper by junior
Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central). Baldwin-Wallace quickly responded with a 12-2 run to take a 14-6 lead with 13:48 left in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to as many as 15 points in the opening period leading 27-12 at the 6:52 mark. Marietta chipped away at the lead managing to cut it to nine points, 33-24, at the half.
Guiler led all scorers with a season-high 26 points. She hit 9-of-13 from the floor and was 8-of-9 at the free throw line. Freshmen
Sierra Sigman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) and
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) added eight and seven points, respectively.
Jessica Carpenter paced Baldwin-Wallace with 15 points. Lexi Rohrbach scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jessica Lairson added 10 points and five boards, while Catherine Spisak notched a game-high nine caroms.
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets forced 16 Marietta turnovers and held the Pioneers without a three-point basket. It was the first time in 81 games that Marietta didn't hit a three-pointer. Baldwin-Wallace won the battle of the boards 44-32.
Guiler started the second half with a quick jumper to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to seven, 33-26. The Pioneers would get no closer. Baldwin-Wallace's biggest lead was 20 points, 59-39, with 8:41 left in the game.
For the game, Marietta shot 38.6% (22-of-57) from the floor, 0% (0-of11) from three-point range and 68.4% (13-of-19) from the free throw line.
Baldwin-Wallace finished the game shooting 43.1% (22-of-51) from the floor, 38.5% (5-of-13) from long range and 69.4% (25-of-36) from the charity stripe.
