Wilmington escapes Women's Basketball

Box Score WILMINGTON Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team gave host Wilmington College all it could handle, but came up short losing 82-73 Wednesday (Feb. 1) night. The Pioneers fall to 9-11 overall on the year and 4-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington is now 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Junior post Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) led the Pioneers with 17 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) scored 14 points while freshman post Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) added 13 points with five boards. Junior guard Kristeva Rowe added eight points with four assists.

Bria Eslick scored 24 points with eight rebounds to lead Wilmington. Makenzie Wippel scored 15 points with seven rebounds and three assists for the Quakers.

Wilmington held the edge through most of the first half, building the lead to as many as 10 points, 31-21 with 4:38 to play before halftime. Marietta was able to cut the deficit down to seven, 36-29, at the break.

The Pioneers would not go down lightly in the second half as Marietta cut the lead down to a single point on four different occasions. Marietta trailed 72-71 with 3:07 remaining after a Guiler layup but could not get any closer down the stretch. Wilmington was able to convert from the free throw line in the waning minutes to hold for the win.

Marietta shot 42.4% (25-of-59) from the field, 50% (6-of-12) from three-point range and 60.7% (17-of-28) from the free throw line.

Wilmington finished shooting 41.4% (29-of-70) from the field, 18.8% (3-of-16) from three and 77.8% (21-of-28) from the free throw line.

The Quakers held a commanding edge on the boards at 52-31. Marietta committed 12 turnovers to Wilmington's 10.

Marietta will return home on Saturday (Feb. 4) afternoon, as it will play host to Ohio Northern. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
