MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team salvaged a split with Heidelberg University on Senior Day Sunday (April 17) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Student Princes took game one 6-2, while Marietta won the nightcap 5-4.
The Pioneers are now 16-11 overall and 6-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg moved to 21-9 overall and 3-7 in the league standings.
Sophomore
Chelsea Chaffin (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) took the loss in game one. Chaffin (13-8) allowed six runs (four unearned) on nine hits with two walks eight strikeouts.
Sophomore
Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) belted her 11th homerun of the spring, a two-run shot in the sixth, but that was all of the offense for Marietta in the game one. Sayre finished 2-for-3 with two RBI in the loss.
Junior
Hazel Brogdon (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak) picked up the win in the nightcap. Brogdon (3-1) went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks. Chaffin earned her first save of the season, retiring three straight Heidelberg batters in the seventh.
Sayre's stellar spring continued in game two as she belted another home run, this time a solo blast to dead center in the fourth. The long ball was Sayre's 12th of the spring and it cut the Heidelberg lead to 3-1.
An inning later, sophomore catcher Marissa McDaniel hit the first grand slam of her career to put Marietta ahead for good at 5-3. Heidelberg added a run in the sixth, before Chaffin came in to preserve the game-two victory.
Sophomore
Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) went 3-for-3 with a run scored in game two. McDaniel went 1-for-3 with four RBI, while Sayre finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Marietta will be on the road for the rest of the season, starting Tuesday (April 19) with a trip to Muskingum. The twin bill is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
