MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College softball split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Capital University Wednesday (April 13) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Crusaders won the opener 4-1, while the Pioneers took the nightcap 7-4. [

With the league split, a third straight at home, Marietta moved to 15-10 overall and 5-5 in the OAC. Capital improved to 15-9, 3-5 in the OAC.
Capital scored runs in the first, fourth and fifth to take a 3-0 advantage in game one. Marietta cracked the scoreboard with a solo home run from Marissa McDaniel, her third of the year, in the bottom of the fifth. The Crusaders added an insurance run in the top of the seventh en route to the 4-1 victory.

Maureen Kertes (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) both collected two hits for Marietta, who stranded 12 runners in the loss. Four different Crusaders had multiple-hit games in the win.
Sophomore
Chelsea Chaffin (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) suffered the loss to fall to 12-7. She allowed four runs on 12 hits, walked one and struck out seven.
The Pioneers wasted little time taking control of game two as they plated three runs on five hits in the first. Kertes singled home the first run, while classmate
Cassady Busellato (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) drove in two with another single.
Marietta extended its advantage to 7-0 in the second. Sophomore
Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) began the scoring with a RBI double. Kertes followed with a sacrifice fly. Senior
Ashley Eberhardt (Massillon/Tuslaw) and sophomore
Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) then singled home a pair of runs.
Capital fought back for two runs in both the top of the third and fourth, but Marietta held on for the 7-4 win.
Sayre and Busellato both had three of Marietta's 14 hits in the win. Kertes also added her second two-hit game of the day.
Jen Reimer led Capital with three hits, all doubles, while Devan Boggs also added three hits in the loss.
Chaffin earned the game-two win in relief after giving up two runs on six hits over the final four innings. She walked three and fanned two while improving to 13-7. Junior
Hazel Brogdon (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak) got the start and scattered two runs on six hits and a walk over the first three frames.
Marietta closes out the home portion of its schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday (April 16) when Heidelberg University visits Marietta Field for a key OAC doubleheader. Seniors
