Marietta ends Rebel Spring Games with 14-0 win over Wittenberg

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team finished up its 2011 spring break trip with a 14-0, mercy-rule victory over Wittenberg University Saturday (March 12) afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games. The win allowed the Pioneers to finish the trip 5-4, while Wittenberg fell to 2-9. [Box Score]

Sophomore Chelsea Chaffin (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) went all five innings and allowed no runs on six hits while striking out two. The Pioneer ace improved to 5-2 on the year.

Marietta jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Senior Hope Cowoski (Perry/Perry) led off the inning with a bunt single. Junior Hazel Brogdon (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak) placed down a bunt to move Cowoski over and also reached by a fielding error from the Tiger second baseman. Cowoski reached third on the play. Sophomore Marissa McDaniel then ripped a double to dead center, scoring Cowoski and Brogdon. A pair of fielder's choice plays by the Tigers allowed the Pioneers to plate two more in the inning.

Marietta added an unearned run in the third to push the lead to 5-0. The Pioneers struck again with two more runs in the fifth to make the score 7-0. McDaniel and sophomore Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) both had a RBI single in the fourth.

The Pioneers scored seven runs in the fifth to enact the ten-run mercy rule. Freshman Hannah Tarski (Independence/Independence) had an RBI single, while McDaniel drove in two more with another hit. Sayre recorded another RBI single to make the score 11-0. Sophomore Trayla Liles (Tollesboro, Ky./Lewis County) then belted a three-run home run to left center to provide the final outcome.

McDaniel led the way for Marietta with a 3-for-4, five RBI game. Sayre went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Liles went 1-for-4 with three RBI.

The Pioneers finished with 12 hits and benefited from five Wittenberg errors.
