Seniors lead Marietta to sweep of Otterbein

Pioneers win 8-2 and 10-5 to finish year 21-14

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior co-captains #Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville/Lakewood Hebron)# and #Katie Woolf (Louisville/Louisville)# finished a combined 9-for-15 at the plate to lead Marietta College softball to an 8-2 and 10-5 sweep of visiting Otterbein College on the final day of their careers Saturday (May 1) afternoon at Marietta Field. The sweep helped the Pioneers finish the season 21-14 overall and tie for fourth place in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) standings with a 9-9 league record. It is the fifth straight year that Marietta eclipsed the 20-win mark. Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle's Pioneers finished the season hitting a school record .336 in 2010. The Cardinals closed their season 7-26 overall and 2-16 in the OAC.

Marietta, who out hit Otterbein 25-13 on the day, never trailed in the opener and stormed back from a 5-0 deficit to take the nightcap.

In game one, Daubenmire, who finished 2-for-4, started the scoring with a two-run double in the bottom of the second. Freshman #Marissa McDaniel# extended the Pioneers' lead to 3-0 with a RBI single through the left side in the third.

Otterbein squeezed home a run in the top of the fourth, but Marietta answered with a four-run bottom of the frame. Woolf, who finished 2-for-4, drove in junior left fielder #Hope Cowoski (Perry/Perry)# with a double, and freshman shortstop #Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley)#, who went 2-for-3, singled home Woolf. Junior right fielder #Ashley Eberhardt (Massillon/Tuslaw)# then drilled a two-run home run to left, her first of the spring.

The Cardinals scored their second run of the game, an unearned run, in the top of the fifth.Again, the Pioneers came right back, scoring their eighth run of the opener. Daubenmire picked up her third RBI with a single through the right side to bring the final score to 8-2.

Freshman #Chelsea Chaffin (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg)# earned the complete game victory to improve to 12-8. She scattered two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out three in the win. Natalie Zwicker took the loss to fall to 5-14. The Pioneers tagged her for seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Otterbein took the early lead in the nightcap with two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals added to their advantage with a three-run third.

Marietta's bats finally awoke and took a 7-5 lead in the fourth. Freshman #Trayla Liles (Tollesboro, Ky./Lewis County)# led off with a solo home run to center field, her second of the year. Three straight singles from junior third baseman #Cassady Busellato (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson)#, junior first baseman #Maureen Kertes (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth)# and Daubenmire loaded the bases. Freshman pinch runner #Audrey Ross (Monroeville/Norwalk)#, who replaced Busellato, scored on a wild pitch, before McDaniel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Woolf then came through with a two-run single and Sayre followed with a RBI single. Busellato kept the inning alive with two-out, RBI single, her second hit of the inning.

The Pioneers kept up their scoring in the fifth, extending their lead to 10-5. Daubenmire began the frame with her ninth career triple, which ranks third on Marietta's all-time list. She then scored on a wild pitch. Cowoski reached on a bunt single and scored on a Woolf's third single of the game. The RBI single gave Woolf 75 for her career, which ranks third all-time. McDaniel, who reached on an error, then scored on a double play.

Woolf, who also finished her career with a school record .991 fielding percentage, and Busellato both finished 3-for-3, while Cowoski, Liles and Daubenmire had two hits in the win. Sayre's fourth inning RBI single gave her 32 RBI, which tied her for second on Marietta's single season list. She also closed the year tied for first on the Pioneers' single season list and third on the career list with eight home runs.

Chaffin threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to win her second game of the day and 13th of the spring, which is tied for fifth on the Pioneers' single-season list. Chaffin (13-8) scattered four hits and struck out four in the victory. Zwicker took the loss again in game two after giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits over the final three innings of work.
