Softball swept by host Yellow Jackets

BEREA, Ohio — Baldwin-Wallace College's Sarah Barker held Marietta College's bats quiet for 14 innings to send the Pioneers to a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) softball losses Friday (April 2) afternoon at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. The Yellow Jackets (12-7, 3-1 OAC) captured game one 2-0 and the completed the sweep with a 2-0 victory over the Pioneers (13-6, 2-2 OAC) in the night cap. [Game 1 Box Score] [Game 2 Box Score]

Baldwin-Wallace jumped out to a 4-0 lead with five hits in the first inning of the opener. The Pioneers scored an unearned run on a RBI single from junior Cassady Busellato (Hilliard, Hilliard Davidson) in the third. The Yellow Jackets added a pair of runs in the fourth en route to the 6-1 win.

Junior Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va., Parkersburg South) took the loss to fall to 6-2. Strong gave up six runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings. Freshman Chelsea Chaffin (Wheelersburg, Wheelersburg) pitched a perfect fifth and sixth to close out the game.

Freshman Katie Swejk (Tallmadge, Tallmadge) finished with two of Marietta's five hits. Tanya Davis had three hits to lead the Yellow Jackets' offense, which produced eight hits in the victory. Marietta stranded eight runners and finished with three errors, while Baldwin-Wallace had two.

Barker walked one and fanned three in the game one win. She then scattered 10 hits but did not give up a run as Marietta stranded 12 base runners in the second game.

The Yellow Jackets, who finished with eight hits, broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth.

Chafffin suffered the loss to fall to 6-4. She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out two in six innings.

Senior catcher Katie Woolf (Louisville, Louisville) finished 3-for-4, junior Hope Cowoski (Perry, Perry) was 2-for-2 and senior center fielder Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville, Lakewood Hebron) was 2-for-3 in a losing effort.

Marietta is back in action Tuesday (April 6) when it visits Bethany (W.Va.) College for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers then play host to Ohio Northern University on Community Day Saturday (April 10) at 1 p.m.
