#5 Ohio Northern sweeps Marietta on Community Softball Day

MARIETTA, Ohio — #5 Ohio Northern University swept a doubleheader from host Marietta College on the fourth annual Community Softball Day Saturday (April 10) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Polar Bears took game one 7-0 and then captured game two 15-5 in five innings. [Game 1 Box Score] [Game 2 Box Score]

Ohio Northern struck first with a run in its initial at-bat of the opener. Kimi Blewett's two-run home run extended the Polar Bears lead to 3-0 in the third. Ohio Northern added two runs in the fourth and two in the seventh en route to the 7-0 victory.

Freshman Chelsea Chaffin (Wheelersburg, Wheelersburg) suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 7-5. Chaffin allowed seven runs (five earned) on 15 hits, walked one and struck out one in seven innings.

Cortney Cash scattered five hits in the shutout, which improved her record to 12-1. Cash walked one and fanned seven in the win.

Mandi Fought finished 4-for-4 and Blewett was 3-for-3 while Katie Cretin and Jackie Mangola both had two hits in the victory.

Again, Ohio Northern plated a run in its first at-bat of game two. Marietta, however, responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take its first lead of the afternoon. Freshman shortstop Michelle Sayre (Ripley, W.Va., Ripley) had a RBI double and junior right fielder Ashley Eberhardt (Massillon, Tuslaw) added a RBI single in the inning. The Polar Bears tied the game with a run in the second and then took the lead for good with three more in the third. Lisa Light had a two-run home run in the third. The Pioneers scored two more runs to pull within a run, 5-4, in the bottom of the third. Sayre led off the frame with a solo home run, while senior center fielder Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville, Lakewood Hebron) had a RBI single in the third.

The Polar Bears then broke the game open with a nine-run fourth. Marietta scored its final run on a Eberhardt RBI ground out in the fourth. Ohio Northern then capped the scoring when Tina Mangola hit a lead off home run in the fifth.

Ohio Northern out hit Marietta 13-8 and overcame five errors in the game two win. The Pioneers made three errors in the loss.

Junior left fielder Hope Cowoski (Perry, Perry), Sayre and Daubenmire all had two hits for Marietta, while Tina Mangola went 3-for-3 and four of her teammates had a pair of hits in the game.

Maggie Molnar worked the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the victory and improve to 8-0. Molnar allowed one unearned run on two hits in the win. Cash pitched the first 2 1/3 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Junior Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va., Parkersburg South) was tagged with the loss after she allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and walked one in 2 1/3 innings. Sophomore Megan Born (Delta, Pike-Delta-York) gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits, walked two and fanned one in her one inning. Chaffin closed the game, giving up six runs (one earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out two in 1 2/3 frames.

Marietta is back in action Wednesday (April 14) afternoon when the Pioneers visit Capital University for an OAC doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
