#8 Etta Express stretches win streak to eight with 10-7 win over Presidents

MARIETTA, Ohio — Junior center fielder John Snyder (Altoona, Pa., Altoona) finished 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead #8 Marietta College to a 10-7, non-conference victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College Thursday (April 1) night at Don Schaly Stadium. The Etta Express improved to 16-3 and stretched its win streak to a season-high eight games. The Presidents fell to 7-5 on the year. Marietta out hit Washington & Jefferson 15-9. The Pioneers also overcame a pair of errors and 11 stranded runners to earn the in-region win.

Senior catcher Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa., Hampton) matched Snyder with three hits in the game and both now lead the squad with identical .392 batting averages. Freshman right fielder Jordan Grilliot (Brookville, Northmont), junior designated hitter Britt Meador (Columbus, Worthington Kilbourne) and sophomore second baseman Kirby Becker (South Euclid, St. Ignatius), who broke open an 8-6 game with a two-run single in the sixth, all had a pair of hits in the victory.

Frank Quirin and John Merlina led the Presidents with two hits, while Mark Thomchick connected on his sixth home run of the season in a losing effort.

The Etta Express jumped on President pitching for four runs in the first, two in the second and two in the third to take an 8-0 lead. Washington and Jefferson got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth and then four more in the fifth to pull within two runs, 8-6. Marietta pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth to extend its lead back to four runs, 10-6. The Presidents got a run back in the seventh but would not get any closer as the Pioneers prevailed 10-7.

Sophomore Mike Mahaffey (Worthington, Bishop Watterson) got the start for Marietta and gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Mahaffey walked two and struck out three in his first varsity appearance at Don Schaly Stadium. Sophomore Logan Lewis (Nashport, Tri Valley) (1-0) worked the next 1 2/3 frames and allowed just one hit to earn his first win of the season. Sophomore Austin Blaski (Pandora, Gilboa) pitched the seventh and gave up one run on two hits, walked one and struck out two. Freshman Luke Langdon (Troy, Troy) threw a 1-2-3 eighth and sophomore Kyle Lindquist (Columbus, Worthington Kilbourne) did the same in the ninth to earn his third save of the spring.

President starter Erik Fargo lasted just two innings. He allowed eight runs on eight hits and walked three. Ian Gabos relieved Fargo and threw the next 3 1/3 innings. Gabos gave up two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out three. Jordan Zivoder retired two of the three hitters he faced in the sixth. Mike Kennedy did not allow a run on two hits over the final two innings.

Marietta is back in action Saturday (April 3) afternoon when it returns to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with a doubleheader against visiting Baldwin-Wallace College.
