Kevin Knab (Lakewood, Lakewood) added 19 points, but the Marietta College men's basketball team closed out its regular season with a 73-64 road loss at Wilmington College Saturday (Feb. 20) afternoon. [

The Quakers, who improved to 18-7, 13-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, avenged a 69-55 Pioneer victory in the teams' first meeting at Ban Johnson Arena on Jan. 13. Marietta fell to 10-15 overall and 6-12 in the OAC.
Marietta got off to a quick start on Saturday and led 15-5 after the first seven minutes of the contest. Wilmington, however, stormed back with a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to take the lead for good 19-15. The Quakers used the momentum to take a 40-28 advantage into the half time break.
Wilmington's lead grew to 17 points, 47-30, in the first 100 seconds of the second half. A jumped by Knab sparked an 18-2 Pioneer run, which cut the deficit to one point, 49-48, with 12:06 remaining in the game. A three-pointer by sophomore
Joe Puch (Brunswick, Brunswick) tied the game at 55-55 four minutes later, but Marietta was unable to recapture the lead down the stretch as Wilmington regrouped and held off for the nine-point win.
Halter finished 10-of-13 from the field, including a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc, while matching Knab with a team-high six rebounds. Unfortunately, only three other Pioneers scored in the game. Freshman
Jason Humphrey (Naples, Fla., Barron Collier) and Puch came off the bench to contribute eight and six points, respectively, while freshman starter
Brian Crader (Thornville, Sheridan) scored the final two points in the loss.
Wilmington, who shot 54.0% (27-of-50) overall, had four players reach double figures. Tyler Ledford paced the squad with 15 points, Tyler White had 14 points and R.J. Brown and Brandon Rogers both contributed 11 points in the win.
Wilmington turned 20 Marietta turnovers into 24 points, while the Pioneers scored 20 points off 15 Quaker giveaways. Wilmington held a 28-26 edge on the boards and outscored Marietta in the paint 38-28.
Marietta now turns its attention to the OAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday (Feb. 24) night when the eighth-seeded Pioneers make the trek to University Heights to battle top-seeded John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m.
