Wash. & Jeff. Defeats Penn St.-Beaver in Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Final

Marietta wins consolation game 93-77 over Wooster

MARIETTA, Ohio — Washington & Jefferson College captured the 26th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot title with a 62-55 victory over Penn State University-Beaver Sunday (Nov. 28) afternoon inside Ban Johnson Arena. Earlier in the day, host Marietta College downed the College of Wooster 93-77 to take the consolation game in the tournament, which was sponsored by Dixie Sporting Goods, the Hamption Inn, the Microtel Inn & Suites and Papa John's Pizza.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Emily Abraham finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals without a turnover to lead Washington & Jefferson College (2-4) to a 62-55 win over Penn State University-Beaver. All-Tournament team selection Blair Cotton matched Abraham with 15 points and added 10 boards, while Vanessa Rivera contributed 10 points and six assists for the Presidents, who shot 48.9% (22-of-45) from the field and 54.5% (6-of-11) from beyond the arc while finishing with a 38-28 edge on the boards.

Heather Sandusky and Jasmine Green both earned All-Tournament team honors for Penn State-Beaver (3-3) after collecting 17 points and 16 points, respectively. Taylor Fulton, Shelby Parks and Brittany Tomaselli all added six points in the loss for the Lions, who shot just 29.8% (17-of-57) from the floor but 47.1% (8-of-17) from long range.

Penn State-Beaver jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the first eight minutes of the game and led by 13 points, 22-9, with 8:50 remaining in the half. Washington & Jefferson closed the period on a 20-5 run to take a 29-27 advantage into the intermission. The Presidents took control of the game with 12-2 run to open the second half. The Lions fought back to hold a 52-51 advantage with 3:57 left, but the Presidents scored 11 of the final 14 points to secure the tournament title.

Four Marietta College players scored in double figures and the team connected on 39 free throws to help it defeat the College of Wooster 93-77 .

All-Tournament pick #Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central)# led all scorers with 22 points while adding six rebounds. #Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman)# connected on four three pointers to finish with 19 points to go along with five boards. #Mallory Hoff (Newport/Frontier)# contributed 14 points and a game-best seven rebounds. #Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County)# added 11 points and a game-high seven assists for the Pioneers, who shot 45.1% (23-of-51) on the day, including 44.4% (8-of-18) from beyond the arc, to go along with 83.0% (39-of-47) from the charity stripe. Marietta also won the battle of the boards 40-34.

Suvi Puripattarapan paced Wooster (1-4) with 15 points and six steals. Samantha Sulser added 14 points and six boards and All-Tournament selection Karley Walker had 13 points. The Fighting Scots shot 44.6% (29-of-65) from the field, 30.0% (6-of-20) from long range and 59.1% (13-of-22) from the free throw line.

The Pioneers, who opened the game with a 13-1 run over the first 3:06, led wire-to-wire Sunday. Marietta took an 11-point lead into the half and extended the advantage to 20 points, 57-37, with 16:59 to play in the game. Wooster cut its deficit to nine points, 71-62, with 6:47 on the clock, but Marietta finished strong en route to the 93-77 victory.

Marietta (3-2) now turns its attention to Ohio Athletic Conference play when rival Muskingum University visits Fenton Court Wednesday (Dec. 1) at 7:30 p.m.
