PITTSBURGH, Pa, — Freshman point guard
Jacob Owens (Mansfield, Mansfield) scored a running floater in the lane as time expired to give the Marietta College men's basketball team a 69-67 non-conference road victory Tuesday (Jan. 19) night at Carnegie Mellon University. The Pioneers' third straight win moved their record to 8-8 overall, while the Tartans fell to 4-10. [
Box Score]
Marietta's final possession began after a Carnegie Mellon timeout with 6.2 second to play in the game. Moments earlier, the Tartans tied the game at 67-67 by hitting 1-of-2 from the free throw line.
Owens, who finished with 11 points, received the baseline inbounds pass and drove the length of the court as time was winding down. He utilized a screen from sophomore
Kevin Knab (Lakewood, Lakewood) at the top key to get into the lane before floating a runner over a pair of defenders as the horn sounded. The shot caromed off the backboard and through the net for the game-winner.
Few may have expected the outcome if they watched the opening minutes of the game, as Marietta did not scored its first point until sophomore
Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green, Bowling Green) hit a jumper with 15:04 left to play in the half. Carnegie Mellon had led 12-0 before Kilpatrick's basket.
The Tartans extended their lead to 14 points, 28-14, with 7:53 left in the period. Freshman wing
Scott Kimmey (Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Falls), however, kept the Pioneers in the game by scoring all nine of his points down the stretch of the first half to anchor a 21-8 run, which enabled Marietta to enter intermission down just one point, 36-35.
A basket by Knab, the reigning OAC Player of the Week, in the opening minute of the second half gave Marietta its first lead of the night, 37-36. Knab, who finished with a game-high 19 points, scored 17 of his 19 in the final period, including the Pioneers' first seven points of the half.
Neither team led by more than two possessions during the second half with Marietta holding the largest advantage, a six-point lead on two occasions midway through the period.
Carnegie Mellon had its biggest lead of the half, 65-62, as the teams entered the final two minutes, but a three-point play by sophomore
Trevor Halter (Malvern, Malvern) tied the game at 65-65 with 1:53 on the clock. Knab's final points of the game put Marietta ahead 67-65, but Carnegie Mellon's Matthew Pettit and Jack Anderson both split a pair from the line in the final minute to tie the game at 67-67 and set up Owen's game-winning play.
Marietta finished the game shooting 53.8% (28-of-52) from the field, and 35.7% (5-of-14) from beyond the arc. Host Carnegie Mellon went 24-of-50 (48.0%) from the floor but just 1-of-9 (11.1%) from long range. The Tartans held a slim 29-28 advantage in the rebounding column and forced Marietta into 16 turnovers while committing 13.
Knab, who was limited to just nine minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, added 4 rebounds to his 19-point effort. Sophomore
Zane Carter (Wellsville, Wellsville) picked up the slack and finished with a season-high 12 points and eight rebounds. Eight of his points and five of his boards came during his 11 minutes on the court in the first period. Halter matched Kimmey's scoring effort with nine points of his own.
Pettit and Anderson both scored 16 points to lead the Tartans. Jon Wolleben added 11 points in the loss.
