WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team stretched its win streak to five games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of host the College of Wooster Friday (March 27) afternoon in action originally slated for Thursday (March 26). 22nd-year Head Coach
Jeanne Arbuckle's squad defeated the Fighting Scots 3-1 in the opener and then won 9-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
Marietta (12-6, 1-1 OAC) set the tone for the day against Wooster (2-16) by scoring two runs in its first at-bat. Sophomore Ashley Eberhardt (Massillon/Tuslaw) (Massillon/Tuslaw) had the big hit, a two-run double to plate seniors Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) and Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville/Lakewood Hebron) (Thornville/Lakewood Hebron).
The Pioneers added a run in the third. McComb led off with a double. She then advanced to third on a ground out by sophomore Hope Cowoski (Perry/Perry) (Perry) and crossed the plate on a sacrifice bunt by Daubenmire.
Sophomore Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) allowed single hits in the second and third before back-to-back hits and a sacrifice fly helped Wooster scraped across a run in the fifth.
Strong (4-2) shutdown the Fighting Scots the rest of the way en route to her fourth win of the season. The right-hander scattered six hits, walked one and fanned three in the complete-game victory.
McComb paced Marietta's offense, which had six total hits, with a 3-for-4 and two-run scored performance. A pair of Wooster players had two hits in the loss.
The Pioneers waited until the second inning to jump on top in the second game. Sophomore Cassady Busellato (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) singled through the right side with one out. Freshman Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) (Wheelersburg) drove in Busellato with a double to center. Freshman Danielle Stein (Dublin/Coffman) (Dublin/Coffman) followed with a walk. McComb then loaded the bases with a single up the middle. Cowoski came through with a two-run single to left, plating Baker and Stein. Daubenmire then made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly, scoring McComb. The fifth run of the inning came around to score on RBI single to left center by Eberhardt.
Marietta added to its lead with two more runs in the third. Busellato slugged her first home run of the season with one out in the frame. Baker then hit her second double of the game and moved to third on a single by Stein. McComb followed with a RBI single to plate Baker and give the Pioneers a 7-0 advantage.
The Pioneers completed their scoring in the top of the fifth. Baker drew a lead off walk. Two batters later, McComb drilled her first career home run, a two-run shot to right center field, to bring the eight-run rule into effect.
Freshman Megan Born (Delta/Pike-Delta-York) (Delta/Delta-Pike-York) threw her second straight shutout to improve to 3-1 and lower her ERA to 0.75. The right-hander, who scattered five hits, walked three and struck out three in the victory.
Once again, McComb led the Pioneers' offense with three hits and two runs scored while also adding three RBI. Busellato and Baker both added two hits in the victory.
Marietta is back in action on Saturday (March 28) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Kenyon College. First pitch of the doubleheader at Marietta Field has been moved up to 12 p.m.
