LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Marietta College women's soccer team traveled to battle Transylvania University Saturday (Sept. 12) afternoon and was shut out, 4–0, in a non-conference action. With the loss, Marietta dropped to 1-4 overall. The win improves Transylvania to 2-1-1.
Transylvania established early offensive control, testing Marietta goalkeeper
Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) with continuous pressure and forcing several early saves. Marietta generated an opportunity in the 8th minute when
Madelyn Call (Letart, W.Va./Point Pleasant) put a shot on target, but Transylvania goalkeeper Carrie Stevens recorded the save. Transylvania broke the tie in the 21st minute when Gracie Carrigan converted a pass from Emersyn Cox to post the opening goal. Transylvania took the 1–0 advantage into intermission.
Transylvania distanced themselves open early in the second period with two quick strikes. In the 48th minute, Eva Blanke found the back of the net to extend Transylvania's lead. Less than two minutes later, Carrigan struck again in the 50th minute to notch her second goal of the match, putting Marietta behind 3–0.
Transylvania substituted Chandler Worth into goal in the 56th minute to maintain the shutout attempt. In the 82nd minute, Makenna Johnson added insurance for Transylvania, scoring off Cox's second assist of the day to make it 4–0. Marietta created a final scoring chance in the 88th minute with a shot by
Katie Heighberger (LaGrange, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy), but Worth made the save to seal the shutout victory.
Agliolo worked 75-plus minutes and notched six total saves for Marietta.
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) came in relief to work the final 14:45.
Marietta will next be in action on Wednesday (Sept. 16) afternoon as they will be the front half of a men's and women's doubleheader. Marietta will battle the College of Wooster with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m.
