BEXLEY, Ohio — Marietta College swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Capital University Saturday (Apr. 25) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 5-1, and then took the second game, 15-10. Marietta improves to 20-16 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. Capital falls to 16-17 overall and 5-9 in the OAC.
Marietta broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning of game one.
Kenzi Denzer (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) had a bases loaded infield single scoring
Erin Beeber (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) with the first run of the game. The Pioneers added another run in the second on an RBI double by
Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional).
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) launched a solo home run in the sixth and
Allie Sheen (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) plated a second run with a sac fly giving the Pioneers a 4-0 lead. Capital got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a double steal that scored Megan Parry.
The final run of the game came off the bat of
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County). Heath smacked a solo home run over the center field fence for a 5-1 Pioneer lead.
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) (6-5) started in the circle and pitched 5.2 strong innings. She allowed one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) notched her first save with 1.1 innings of shutout relief striking out two.
Alyssa Miller (8-6) struck out 10 Pioneers in 5.0 innings but was still tagged with the loss. She gave up four runs on four hits and walked five.
Heath and Denzer each had two hits in the game for Marietta.
Game two was a wild one. Marietta built an 11-1 lead only to see Capital score nine straight runs to get within one, 11-10.
Kiefer started and worked 3.1 inning giving up five runs on eight hits in the no decision.
Kylie Cobb (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) (4-4) picked up the win pitching 1.0 inning.
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) threw 2.2 innings. Megan Mlinaric started and got the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits.
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) finished 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Pioneer offense. Heath, Sweeney, Johnson, Sheen, and
Jocelyn Grassman (Perrysville, Ohio/Loudonville) each had two hits in the game.
Marietta plays at Hiram College on Tuesday (Apr. 28). The first game starts at 3:30 p.m.
