Softball splits nonconference doubleheader at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio — Marietta College split a nonconference softball doubleheader at Hiram College on Tuesday (Apr. 28) afternoon. The Terriers won game one, 6-5, while Marietta took game two, 9-7. The Pioneers are now 21-17 overall, Hiram is 17-19 on the season.
 
Marietta scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning of game breaking a 3-3 tie. Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) lined an RBI double to right center scoring Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington) with the go ahead run and Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) scored on a sac fly from Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional).
 
Hiram responded with three runs in the home half of the inning to steal the victory. Hannah Schimmoeller tied the game with a triple and then Lola Thomas walked it off with a single through the left side of the infield scoring Schimmoeller.
 
The Pioneers took an early lead on an RBI double from White in the third. Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) made it 2-0 with a double in the fourth. The Terriers tied it up with two runs in the fifth. Each team scored one in the sixth inning.
 
Kylie Cobb (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) (4-5) got the loss. Cobb gave up four runs on six hits in 1.2 innings. Kiefer started and threw 4.2 innings allowing two unearned runs on four hits. Avery Contini (5-6) got the win in relief. She pitched 3.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits.
 
White finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Campbell and Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) had two hits.
 
In game two, Marietta used a pair of four-run innings to grab the lead and then held off the Terriers for the win. Mallory Gorgacz (Edinburg, Pa./Union Area) cleared the bases with a single to right in the second inning giving Marietta a 3-1 lead. White drove in Gorgacz with a double.
 
After Hiram tied the game, 4-4, in the third, the Pioneers plated four more in the fourth. Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional) hit a bases loaded double driving in three runs and then scored on a single from Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley).
 
Once again Hiram responded and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to get within a run, 8-7. Marietta got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Campbell scored on another Johnson single.
 
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) (8-4) went the distance in the circle for the win. She allowed seven runs on 15 hits in 7.0 innings of work. Sarah Ciereszewski (2-2) started and got the loss giving up nine unearned runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings.
 
White had three hits in game two, including a double. Johnson had two hits and two RBI, while Sweeney had three RBI.
 
Marietta closes out the regular season at home on Saturday (May 2) against Wilmington. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
