Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse drops home finale to Baldwin Wallace; celebrates six Seniors

MARIETTA, Ohio – The incoming stormy weather was not enough to stop the celebration of Senior Day, as Marietta College honored six players for the tremendous contribution to the program.  But, when the game action started, the Pioneer women's lacrosse team could not over overtake the display of offense that Baldwin Wallace University brought and dropped the home finale to the Yellow Jackets, 16-5, on Saturday (April 18) at Marietta Field.  With the loss, the Pioneers dropped to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.  Baldwin Wallace improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.

"Not the outcome we wanted for our seniors today but again, we fought so hard," said Head Coach Lindsay Reho.

Before the game, the Pioneers held a special presentation to honor the six seniors on the roster.  Renee Mulvaney (Midland, Mich./Midland), Mallory Wiles (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), Maggie Downard (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson), Havana Gomez (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic), Catherine Martin (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), and Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) were all honored for the accolades they provided the program over the last four years.

"I cannot express just how much this class has meant for our program," said Reho of her seniors. "Renee, Mal, Maggie, Havana, Alayna, and Cat have rewrote the books for our program with wins, playoff appearances, and making our culture what it is today. Words cannot describe how much this program will miss their contributions on and off the field. They deserve the world and I cannot wait to see what their future holds!"

As the game started, the Yellow Jackets wasted little time to get on the board as they jumped out to a two-goal lead in the early minutes.  The Pioneers took advantage of being a player up after a Baldwin Wallace yellow card to get their first score of the contest.  Molly Dickens (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) knifed through the defense and fired a shot into the nets to help cut the BW lead to one.  The Jackets answered quickly as Ella Szalay got a score.  Mulvaney kept her team close as she fired in a score at the 8:07 mark, but BW closed out the final minutes of the period with three scores to take a 6-2 advantage into the second period.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first few minutes of the second period, but Claire Alic broke through to advance the Yellow Jacket lead.  The Pioneers remained without a score for the remainder of the period, but BW added two more tallies and led 9-2 at the half.

Baldwin Wallace further distanced themselves with six goals in the third period, but Marietta closed out the fourth period strong, getting goals from Dickens, Fiona Betzhold, and Mulvaney.   In the end, the difference was too much to overcome and Baldwin Wallace would cruise to a 16-5 OAC victory.

Tessa Labrasciano (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior) worked the first three quarters in the nets and made 10 saves.  Morgan Parker (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) worked the final period and made three saves.

Dickens led the Pioneers with two goals.  Mulvaney and Downard added goals in their final home game.  Betzhold also added a score.  Mulvaney also led with four groundballs.  Francis led with five draw controls in her final home game.  Lydia McCarter (Fort Mill, S.C./Catawba Ridge) also collected three draw controls and led with two caused turnovers.

The Pioneers will travel to the University of Mount Union this Wednesday (April 22)  for the regular season finale and a chance to reach the OAC playoffs.  The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
