No. 16 Case Western Reserve edges Baseball 2-1

LEXINGTON, South Carolina — No. 16 ranked Case Western Reserve University came from behind to defeat Marietta College by the score of 2-1 Monday (Mar. 9) afternoon. The Spartans improve to 7-4 overall, while the Pioneers slip to 1-5 on the season.

Runs were hard to come by as pitching dominated the day. Case Western sophomore Eric Colgrove squared off against Marietta's junior ace Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield).

Colegrove got a no decision after throwing 6.2 innings and giving up one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Ayush Shetty (1-0) picked up the win working the final 2.1 innings of one-hit relief.  Ziance (1-3) went the distance for Marietta and was charged with two runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Marietta got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Brett Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) led off with an infield single to the shortstop. Bradley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Ferncreek) dropped down a perfect bunt and legged out a single. Hamel was put out on a ground ball from Trevor Hall (Fishers, Ind./Fishers). Zack Molloy (Chambersburg, Pa./Saint James) was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) hit a ground ball to the second baseman scoring Jones.

Three straight two-out singles allowed Case Western to tie game, 1-1, in the top of the fifth. Collin Pool singled up the middle and moved to third on a base hit to right field from Nate Arterburn. Eli Westrick followed with a chopper to third and was safe at first scoring Pool.

The Spartans plated the winning run in the eighth. Westrick laced a one-out triple to right field and scored on a sac fly off the bat of Tyler Stillson for a 2-1 Case Western lead.

Marietta got a runner on base in the eighth and managed to get the potential tying run into scoring position in the ninth before Shetty shut the door.

Hall was 2-for-4 for the Pioneers. Molloy reached base four times getting hit by pitches three times and walking once.

Westrick, Pool, and Matt Trout each had two hits in the game for the Spartans.

Marietta plays Swarthmore College on Tuesday (Mar. 10) at 3:30 p.m.
