LEXINGTON, South Carolina — Marietta College lost to Swarthmore College by the score of 12-6 Tuesday (Mar. 10) afternoon in nonconference baseball action. The Pioneers slip to 1-6 on the season. Swarthmore improves to 9-3 overall. The two teams will play again on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
The Pioneers jumped on top with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman
Evan King (Waynesville, Ohio/Springboro) laced a two-out single up the middle scoring
Zack Molloy (Chambersburg, Pa./Saint James) and
Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin). Fellow rookie
Cam Coleman (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) followed with a triple to left center driving in King.
The Garnet got one run back in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly from Alessandro Propper-Bowring.
Marietta tallied an unearned run in the fifth and then added two more runs in the sixth.
Trevor Hall (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) had an RBI infield single in the sixth and
Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) drove in a run with a single to right.
Swarthmore battled back to tie the game. A three-run home run to right field from Aidan Sullivan leveled the game, 6-6. The Garnet took its first lead with four runs in the seventh. Andrew Firko had an RBI single, Wilson Henze drove in a run, and Leor Kedar had a two-run double.
A two-run home run from Propper-Bowring in the eighth sealed the victory for Swarthmore.
Ezra Schwartz (1-0) got the win in relief. He worked the final 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Gavin Rigby got the start and allowed no runs on two hits in 3.0 innings.
Matthew Farmer (Amanda, Ohio/Teays Valley) (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs, one earned, on three hits in 1.2 innings.
Luke Czarnomski (Medina, Ohio/Medina) started and worked 4.0 innings allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Hall and
Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers. Zac Kahn and Firko had two hits for the Garnet.
