LEXINGTON, South Carolina — For the second time in two days, Swarthmore College posted a 12-6 win over Marietta College on Wednesday (Mar. 11). The loss drops Marietta to 1-7 on the season, while Swarthmore improves to 10-3 overall.
Swarthmore erupted for six runs in the top of the ninth inning breaking a 6-6 tie. Andrew Firko drove in the winning run with an infield single. Jackson Clemens and Brad Johnston each had two-run base hits, and Aidan Sullivan drove in a run with a ground out.
Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) (0-1) took the loss. Bees started the ninth inning on the mound and gave up six runs on three hits with three walks.
Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) started and allowed five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic),
Reece Rupert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland), and
Matthew Farmer (Amanda, Ohio/Teays Valley) also threw in relief for the Pioneers.
David Herrin (3-1) got the win for the Garnet working 1.0 inning and giving up three runs on no hits. Aidan Tinker started and pitched 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
Swarthmore got out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the first and three more in the third. Marietta got on the board in the third on an RBI double from
Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban). The Pioneers picked up a second run in the fourth when
Drew McKenna (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) scored on a passed ball.
The Garnet extended its lead to 6-2 with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. Ciavolella picked up another RBI with a single to right in the seventh. Marietta tied the game with three more runs in the eighth.
Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) scored on an error, McKenna scored on a single from
Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), and
Cam Coleman (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, 6-6.
Ciavolella went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) and Coleman each had two hits.
Marietta plays Mitchell and No. 20 Case Western Reserves on Thursday (Mar. 12) at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
