Baseball falls to Berry twice

MOUNT BERRY, Georgia — Berry University posted two come from behind victories over Marietta College Saturday (Mar. 7) afternoon. The Vikings won 9-7 in the continuation of a game suspended from February 28th and then won today's originally scheduled game, 8-6.

The day started with Marietta leading 7-5 in the top of the sixth inning of the game started in Marietta last weekend. The Pioneers had taken the lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Drew Mckenna and Bradley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Ferncreek) had two-run doubles, while Trevor Hall (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) smacked an RBI double and Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) drove in a run with a single.

Berry plated three runs in the sixth and added an insurance run in the ninth inning for the win. The Vikings got sacrifice flies from Chance Edmonds and Riley Uhls in the sixth and Uhls hit a solo home run in the ninth.

Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) (0-1) was tagged with the loss. He gave up three unearned runs on one hit in 2.1 innings. Luke Czarnomski (Medina, Ohio/Medina) started the game on the mound last weekend and worked 3.0 innings giving up three runs on four hits.

Cam Welsh (1-0) picked up the win tossing 4.1 innings of shutout baseball. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Jon Strydon threw the ninth inning for the save.

Hall was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game, both doubles. Marietta had six doubles in the game.

In today's originally schedule game, Marietta jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) got things started with a two-run double. Drew Mckenna plated a run with a single and Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) and Jameson Embrescia (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) each drove in a run with doubles.

Will Waters got Berry on the board with an Rbi single to right field in the second. McKenna knocked in Marietta's final run with a ground out in the fifth for a 6-1 Pioneer lead.

Berry scored in each of the next four frames for the win. The Vikings plated three in the fifth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh, and one more in the eighth.

Marietta used eight different pitchers in the game. Czarnomski started and threw 2.0 innings giving up one run on two hits. Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) (1-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.

Eric Fountain (2-1) got the win in relief for Berry. He worked 2.0 innings and gave up one run on two hits. Jackson Collett started and lasted one-third of an inning giving up five runs on three hits. Strydom struck out two Pioneers in the ninth for his second save of the day.

Ciavolella, DeCello and Embrescia each had a double and a single in the game for the Pioneers.

Marietta plays No. 16 ranked Case Western Reserve on Monday (Mar. 9) at 1:00 p.m. in. Lexington, South Carolina.
