OBERLIN, Ohio — The Marietta College women's lacrosse team got to briefly reunite with a familiar face as they were welcomed in by Oberlin College Wednesday (Mar. 4) evening. The Yeowomen are now coached by former Pioneer head coach Malory Nadrah. The nice reunion was brief, though, as Marietta was plagued by turnovers throughout the evening, falling to defeat by the score of 14-5. The Pioneers fall to 2-2 on the season and the Yeowomen improve to 4-0 overall.
"Not our day today," Marietta head coach
Lindsay Reho said. "We dug ourselves into a hole the first half and couldn't find a way out. Our defense played tough today and Tessa came up with some key saves on some long possessions. Back to the drawing board for another chance to get better on Saturday."
The first quarter saw both team get off to slow starts, although Oberlin had many more score opportunities. Also, Marietta had difficulty clearing the ball which lessened their score chances. Oberlin finally broke the ice at the 7:27 mark as Mary Rodman found the back of the net and, two possessions later, Kylie Thompson scored to give the Yeowomen the early lead. On the next possession,
Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) secured the draw control and sent a pass to
Molly Dickens (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), who dodged her way to the net and scored the first goal of the evening for the Pioneers. Oberlin managed one more score with :10 seconds left and took a 3-1 going into the second period.
Oberlin controlled the second period as they outshot the Pioneers 11 to 3. The Yeowomen got scores four minutes in and at the halfway mark to extend the lead. Later in the period, Oberlin scored three times in a 90-second span and took a 8-1 advantage going into halftime.
Oberlin got a quick score to begin the third period, but were held in check for much for much of the remainder of the period. Marietta could not take advantage, though.
Mallory Wiles (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) got an unassisted score at the 9:01 mark but had problems chipping further at the lead. Oberlin finally answered with a score with two minutes remining, but Marietta got a score from
Lydia McCarter (Fort Mill, S.C./Catawba Ridge) put the score at 10-3 going into the final period.
The Pioneers worked quickly in the fourth, getting another score from Dickens but Oberlin again answered quick to keep the advantage at seven. Marietta amped the pressure, firing shot after shot, and broke through at the 8:02 mark as Wiles fought off a tough cross check and deposited the ball in the goal. Unfortunately, Oberlin answered a minute later to push the lead back to seven. Oberlin would tack on two more scores in the final minutes and cruised to a 14-5 victory.
The Pioneers committed 27 turnovers and was only 13-of-26 on clear attempts.
Tessa Labrasciano (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior) worked all 60 minutes for the Pioneers and faced 36 shots, 26 of which were on goal, and made 12 saves.
Wiles and Dickens led the Pioneers with two goals apiece.
Maggie Downard (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson) led with four groundballs.
Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) finished with a team-high four draw controls.
Marietta will travel this Saturday (March 7) to play Mount Aloysius College with the game scheduled for 3 p.m.
