Baseball wraps up spring trip with a loss to Cortland

MOUNT BERRY, Georgia — SUNY Cortland scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Red Dragons defeated Marietta College, 18-5, Sunday (Mar. 15) afternoon. Marietta falls to 2-10 overall, while Cortland improves to 7-5-1 on the season.
 
Nolan Smith launched a two-run home run to center field and Jack McFerran smacked a three-run shot over the fence in left field as Cortland plated six runs in the first inning. The Red Dragons added two more runs in the second for an 8-0 lead.
 
Marietta answered with a two-run home run from Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) in the third. Trevor Hall (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) led off with a double and then Ciavolella cleared the bases with the home run.
 
Cortland scored in every inning except the third. Marietta added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Wyatt Stapleton (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw) drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run in the sixth and Hall plated the second with a sac fly. Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) drove in the Pioneer run in the seventh with a double.
 
Evan Wilson (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) (1-1) started on the mound for Marietta and took the loss. He allowed five runs on five hits. Three other Pioneers pitched in the game.
 
Talon Elkins (2-1) started and got the win for Cortland. He worked 5.0 innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Elkins walked two and struck out five. Anthony Sampo and Luke Boule threw in relief for the Red Dragons.
 
Ciavolella and Cam Coleman (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) each had two hits in the game for Marietta.
 
Marietta returns home to host Washington & Jefferson College on Thursday (Mar. 19). First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
