No. 4 Belhaven edges Baseball 7-6

MOUNT BERRY, Georgia — No. 4 ranked Belhaven University rallied late to beat Marietta College by the score of 7-6 Saturday (Mar. 14) afternoon at the Berry Invitational. Marietta moves to 2-9 on the season, while Belhaven improves to 14-2 overall.
 
The Blazers scored a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and three more in the eighth erasing a 4-1 Marietta lead. With the game tied 4-4 heading into the eighth inning. Belhaven scored on an error and then got a sac fly from Owen Abney and an RBI single from JD Weed for a 7-4 lead.
 
Marietta answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to get within one. Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) drove in the first run with an infield single. Cam Coleman (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) plated the second with a single to left. The Pioneers had two runners on base when the inning ended.
 
The Pioneers got a base runner in the bottom of the ninth. But Belhaven got a double play to end the game preserving the victory.
 
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Marietta grabbed the lead with three runs in the third frame. The first two runs scored on balk call, while Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) plated the third run with a line drive single to left.
 
Belhaven got a solo home run from Brayden Thompson in the sixth. A pair of bases loaded walks in the seventh tied the game, 4-4.
 
Hayden Robers (1-0) got the win in relief. He pitched the final 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Kaleb Smith started and worked 6.0 innings. He allowed four runs on five hits.
 
Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic) (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Madan gave up two runs on no hits in two-thirds of an inning. Brayden Wells (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) made his first collegiate start and pitched 6.0 innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits. Three other Pioneers toed the rubber in the game.
 
Michael Coavolella and Rothlisberger each had two hits for the Pioneers.
 
Marietta finishes its spring trip on Sunday (Mar. 15) with a game against SUNY Cortland. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
