Game Recap: Softball |

Softball splits another pair of Space Coast Spring Games

VIERA, Florida — The Marietta College softball team split a pair of games Tuesday (Mar. 10) at the Space Coast Spring Games. The Pioneers were defeated by Lakeland University, 12-11, but bounced back to defeat Saint Mary's College, 5-3. Marietta moves to 2-4.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early four-run lead against Lakeland.  Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) drove in the first run with an RBI ground-rule double down the left field line, scoring Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington)Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) then singled to drive in Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton), followed by a sacrifice fly from Grace Elliot.  Lauren Musgrove (Dillsboro, Ind./South Dearborn) then doubled in a run for a 4-0 Pioneer lead.

Lakeland came back in the bottom of the third inning as they plated five runs. Lexi Howard drove in two runs with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Muskies a 6-4 advantage.  Marietta took back the lead in the fourth inning as Allie Sheen (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) blasted the first home run of her Pioneer career over the left field fence, giving Marietta a 7-6 lead.

Lakeland opened it up in the bottom of the fourth as they got consecutive RBI singles from Maddie Raske, Reyna Rupnow, and McKenzie Staudinger.  Rupnow eventually scored and on a wild pitch and Callie Linders closed the big inning with an RBI single up the middle, giving Lakeland a 12-7 lead after four innings.

Marietta chipped away at the lead but could not overtake it.  Kylie Cobb's (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) RBI double in the sixth cut the deficit to three.  The Pioneers plated two runs in the seventh inning but could not do anymore, leaving two on base as Lakeland recorded the final out.

Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) (0-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. She threw 0.2 innings and allowed five runs on five hits. Hancock started and worked 3.2 innings giving up three runs on four hits. Violet Ellerbrock (Clinton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) and Cobb also pitched in the game for the Pioneers.

Addison Dierschow (1-0) got the win in relief, allowing two runs, one unearned, on 4 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Musgrove went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Pioneers.  Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood), Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional), Heath, and White each had two hits in the game.

In the second game of the afternoon, Marietta scored a pair of runs in the third to take the lead.  Kenzi Denzer (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) led the inning off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then came around to score on a double from White.  Streets then brought home a run on a fielder's choice to take a 2-0 lead.  Marietta then added a run in the fourth as Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) blasted a homer to extend the lead.

Saint Mary's finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Marietta answered in the bottom half of the inning.  Johnson drove in another pair of runs with an opposite field double to put the lead back at three.

The Belles had one last chance in the seventh.  Lydia Hinga opened the inning reaching base on an error and then advanced to second on a bunt single from Allie Moss.  Maddie Duncan then followed with a single to plate Hinga, cutting the lead to two.  That would be as close as they could get as the Pioneers were able to retire the final two batters to collect the win.

Emma Cozza (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) (2-0) scattered five hits over 5.0 innings for the win. She allowed two runs and struck out one batter.  Walters worked the final two innings to earn the save.  She gave up one run on four hits.

Marietta plays on Wednesday (Mar. 11) as they battle Greenville University and Monmouth College. The Greenville game starts at 12:15 p.m. followed by Monmouth at 2:30 p.m.
