VIERA, Florida — The Marietta College softball team won a pair of games Wednesday (Mar. 11) at the Space Coast Spring games. The Pioneers beat Greenville, 6-5, in eight innings and then downed Monmouth, 6-2.
Marietta improves to 4-4 on the season. Greenville falls to 7-3 overall, while Monmouth is now 3-7 on the season.
Mallory Gorgacz (Edinburg, Pa./Union Area) lined a walk-off single to right field scoring
Lauren Musgrove (Dillsboro, Ind./South Dearborn) in the bottom of the eighth inning against Greenville. Musgrove tied the game with an RBI single to right that scored
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy), who started the inning at second base due to the international tiebreaker rule.
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) sacrifice bunted Walters to third before Musgrove and Gorgacz delivered the back-to-back hits.
Walters (1-3) picked up the win throwing the top of the eighth inning. She allowed one unearned run on no hits.
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) started in the circle and worked 3.2 innings giving up four runs on six hits.
Emma Cozza (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) tossed 3.1 innings of shutout relief allowing just two hits.
Kayla Kocher (3-1) was tagged with the loss. She took over in the circle in the bottom of the eighth and gave up two unearned runs on two hits. Sarah Salas allowed four runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings, while Lauren Kehl worked 1.2 innings and allowed one hit.
Greenville built a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth. Marietta rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, 4-4.
Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional) had an RBI double,
Allie Sheen (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) smacked a two-run double, and
Kylie Cobb (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) plated the fourth run with a sac fly.
Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington),
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood), and Musgrove each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
In the second game, Marietta scored four runs in the last three innings to break a 2-2 tie. Musgrove had an RBI single in the fifth. Streets drove in two runs with a single in the sixth, and Kenzie Denzer had an RBI single in the seventh.
Denzer also drove in a run in the second inning with a double to right center.
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) got the Pioneers on the board when she scored on an error in the first inning.
Walters (2-3) went the distance in the circle for her second win of the day. She allowed two runs on five hits with two walks. Lydia Overcash (1-2) started and got the loss throwing 6.0 innings and giving up five runs on 15 hits. Addie Greene pitched the seventh and was charged with one run on two hits.
Musgrove and Denzer each went 3-for-3 to lead the Pioneers. Heath, Streets,
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton), and
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) had two hits apiece.
Marietta plays St. Catherine and Rivier on Friday (Mar. 13) at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
