MARIETTA, Ohio — Franciscan University scored quickly to start the game and, after giving up the tying goal early in the second half, scored the go-ahead goal late to defeat Marietta College by the score of 2-1 Saturday (Sept. 13) evening in men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 3-3-1 overall, while Franciscan improves to 2-4-0 on the season.
"Once again we give up an early goal, that was largely preventable," said Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin. "Now we are chasing and it's just so difficult to do against a team as well coached as Franciscan. Can't say we didn't have our chances, we did, but I am at a loss for the early goals."
Franciscan took the lead quickly in the fourth minute. George Phillips scored with assist from Anthony Venditti and the Barons led 1-0 at the half.
The Pioneers came out in the second half and finally got on the board as
Parker Bolin (Albany, Ohio/Alexander) scored off of an assist from
Lee Miller (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville). The game remaining tied until the 78th minute as Franciscan's Logan Cross scored. The Pioneers could not answer and the Barons would go on to take the 2-1 victory.
Noah Walker (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers posting five saves in the match. Aiden Miller had five saves for Franciscan.
Marietta will welcome in Case Western Reserve University this Wednesday in the front half of a soccer double header. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
